Great company if you’re a Consultant. Avoid the HR positions advertised.
|
|
Small, family-owned company, remote work schedules. Consultants working on client projects get diverse opportunities and some work from home everyday. Company is growing rapidly because of increased consulting opportunities.
|
Lack of established policies and procedures. Management doesn’t listen to employees or hire the right people for the right positions. Quite a bit of Nepotism. High turnover in HR position. Pay is not competitive within DMV area for similar positions.

Upper Management/Owners need to survey employees. While they’re are many employees that are satisfied, just as many are overworked and looking to leave the company. Newly promoted partner, who also happens to be the Principal’s wife, is a former school teacher who is the reason each of the last 4 HR associates have left the company within a span of 3 years. The latest HR person was just hired in February but has already given 2 weeks notice because of what is suspected is the same reason all others have left... not being able to perform the job they are experienced in because the Principal’s wife continues to assert herself in all HR matters without HR experience. Hopefully, the revolving door and lack of HR leadership in the company won’t come back to bite them. Also, hire people with the right skill sets in the right positions and not due to nepotism, another issue that could come back to haunt the company later.

Management was disrespectful and the principal seemed completed oblivious of anything going on with staff. Expectations were huge and acknowledgement for the hard work was non-existent and seemed completely unnoticed. Very toxic environment.

For a company who offers so much communication with regards to expectations, how about giving a person a heads up on something they need to work on instead of just cutting them. I'm thankful that I know now and didn't give more time and effort just to be let go.

Primarily, the "work virtual" part was a big pro for me. In the DC Metro area, not having to commute is its own raise, and this was a favorable aspect of what drew me to work here. Secondly, the dedicated focus on personal professional development (continued education, certification, conference, etc.) is a favorable con.

Working virtually has its downsides, mainly that the line between work and home becomes blurred.

Work Hard - Great Rewards

The best part of working for BTG is that its partially virtual. Every week, there's at least 1-2 opportunities to work from home or from one of the offices in DC or Reston. That comes in handy during bad weather. Also, I was pleasantly surprised that BTG provides year-end bonuses to all staff (not just management).

You are going to work HARD. BTG is rapidly growing and most employees are required to do multiple tasks simultaneously. We all chip in where necessary--which is good because you can grow as far as your hard work takes you. But, if you're not used to or willing to work hard, working at BTG may not be the place for you.

Hard Work Pays Off

I started working at BTG for the ability to grow with a small company that was doing great things and growing rapidly. I stayed for the unparalleled work-life balance. BTG allows work from home at least one day a week for all employees, and in my case, I can work from home, work at the office or even from a coffee shop. Because of the nature of my work, I can work completely virtually (unless there is a meeting or tight deadline). As a management consulting company, the expectation of consistent quality is high, but there is a level of open communication from the top down that I haven't seen in my over 20+ year career. And, I must say that the work is frequent and complex, but the work-life balance makes it all worth it.

Long hours. A little isolating since employees are scattered through the Mid-Atlantic. This makes it harder to really get to know your co-workers.

Senior management is a group of very smart, well-connected professionals that shares every quarter how the company is doing and their vision of where the company will go. But, BTG has employees throughout metropolitan Washington, DC, Northern and Southern VA, and Baltimore and really only come together once a quarter. There should be an effort to bring employees together more often so that we can get to know each better and build a more cohesive team.
