Difficult transition to a new reality

Relied work environment, not very demanding, good work like balance.
CEL is a great place to cruise in awaiting retirement.
Mostly nice people.

Lack of success out of distribution, no clear vision or path forward to a new business model while the distributions business phases out.
So many initiatives with wishful thinking yet, no measurable successes.
CEO promotes a culture of worship rather than initiative and innovation.

Work/life balance company - with unrealized potential

Owned by employees via ESOP plan. Good work/life balance culture with a family atmosphere. Cash compensation usually good since stock options or IPO not possible. Large facility in a great location with plenty of room. Some room for advancement as long as you can stay off the CEO's "naughty list."
|
Pretty much in a constant state of "reorganization", as many of the company's initiatives over the last few years have not been all that successful. Transition from a single source distributor has been rocky to say the least. Board of Directors and CEO still the same despite many years of limited success. CEO has a tendency to target people for termination (even if they have had tremendous success in prior years) and there is usually no way to change the inevitable.

Management is understanding about work-life balance and flexible about taking time off to address personal business. It is not a work-aholic company. People typically work reasonable hours. It's rare to find people working on nights or weekends.

Job security fears are still present after the layoff of 2008. People tend to be overly protective of their job duties and somewhat territorial.

Definitely the place to retire or raise a family...
If you are aggressive, motivated and want to make change happen, CEL is not the place for you.

The company does not decides of its destiny, but rather NEC Electronics does. The Japanese partner is disconnected from American business realities, whether it be best business practices, product roadmaps or customer needs. If it does not exist in Japan, it does not exist, period!
