Solid company, great product
|
|
Overall the people are great
Cool office if you're into that
Better product than near-peer competitors
Good sales job to learn Gap selling
Sales team is super nice, most of support and marketing are too
Autonomy if you don't need hand holding
|
In office 2x week. Many people are remote including senior leadership, so this reduces the feeling of trust and makes the sales team less efficient. Any feedback falls on deaf ears.
Trying to get bought; this is good long term, but led to a really maniacal focus on the rule of 40. This led to layoffs where we let go of some seriously valuable people leaving less talented individuals to pick up the slack. Led to a lot of issues and things going unresolved.
Hiring: They have no consistent process. As the company grew, 'bad apples' slipped through the cracks; unfortunately, some of these bad apples are in pivotal departments like revops which made life VERY hard. It was difficult to get anything done with that team without them getting very agitated. They came in with no understanding of why things are the way they are, and instead of seeking to understand first, they pretended like they knew it all. When presented with something they were unsure of, their first instinct was to get mad and belittle you as a way to cover their lack of understanding. I have truly never worked with anyone so difficult until these revops hires were made. We had to strategize how to bring things to them without getting yelled at, and even then, it'd take months just to get a yes or no on something. Reading 'how to talk when kids won't listen' so you can get projects completed at work is crazy... what's crazier is the techniques made it a bit easier to work with them. What's that tell you?
In addition, we had managers in departments that made zero changes to improve their teams after coming on years before. They just didn't know what needed to be improved. These are the people that CallRail kept after the layoffs though.
Overall, the focus on rule of 40 and some of the external hires they brought on over the past couple years really made it worse than it was before.
You'll need to figure things out for yourself. I view this as a pro, but some may view as a con.

Read the book Who by Geoof Smart and Randy Street. This will help prevent some of the bad hires that have slipped through.
Put someone that's well versed in product management in charge of that team. Nothing major has really improved with the product since I had started, and the base functionality wasn't as reliable. The product team is closed off; I was always told to give them more feedback, but when I did, I could tell it was being disregarded the moment it was heard. That team is very cliquey but I'm not sure why.
Take a look at revops. Seriously. Talk to the teams that need to interact with them a lot. You have a serious culture issue from that team that made the job a lot more stressful. Shouldn't be hard to figure out where the problems are coming from. I heard they recently got more control over other departments too... I can't imagine reporting to that team.

Cool office with easy parking, pretty good selection of snacks in the break room

It seems like the company was better off either pre-pandemic or before the original founder left. No focus on employees, whatsoever.
The review a little back is a little harsh but also not untrue...

People Focused, but Leadership is it's greatest weakness
|
|
CallRail does their best to be an inclusive, understanding work environment that encourages work/life balance and mental health. They attempt initiatives that remind employees that their mental health is an important part of their professional life.
The people at CallRail are generally positive and successful professionals. You will work alongside skilled people.
|
Leadership has issues with commitment. Many work initiatives, months in the making, are killed in the 11th hour.
The Directors and C-level leadership seem to having some difficulty with sticking to their guns. The Product department gets completely reorganized, causing teams to lose all momentum on their projects. It's hard to plan a year ahead when, each year, the department is restructured.
Clearly the company is open to restructuring, but there was one instance where they fired a PM and Designer of a product and it felt like a move to assign product failure blame off of management and onto the team. It left a bad taste in my mouth.

Best company I have ever worked for! Culture, Mission, Team, and Benefits are top notch
|
|
People - The people at CallRail make CallRail. I've had the honor working with some of the best and brightest at every level of the company making it one of the most fulfilling aspects of my career at CallRail. Cross functional teamwork and collaboration is a company strength, but CallRail still pushes to always make improvements especially as the company has grown. I feel that I've grown much faster in my career and as a person due to the relationships I've formed at CallRail.
Work/Life Balance - CallRail has the best work/life balance of any tech company I have ever worked for and it's ingrained in the culture. We work with intensity, but also make sure we take time to "turn it off." This is so important as I've worked for multiple tech companies that expected working as much as possible, but had "unlimited vacation" that was almost impossible to take advantage of. CallRail genuinely respects personal time as I never get bothered while on vacation unless it's a true emergency (very rare) and enjoy the flexibility for family and life events.
Mission and Product - Since day one I've loved the mission of helping SMBs and agencies. I get so much satisfaction helping businesses in our own backyard grow their business by unlocking them to market with confidence. I'm even more excited about the things I've seen with our application of AI for our customers and the dramatic impact it has on growing and marketing their business. Making it accessible, affordable, and easy to use is so important and I look forward to seeing what's next. It is amazing to see us bring AI alpha features quickly to market before anyone else...I hope we continue to deliver value at this speed!
Communication/Transparency - CallRail communicates often through a variety of different mechanisms such as slack, company all hands, department meetings, and more. Every employee is educated on company performance, especially the financial aspects. If employees don't understand some of the information disseminated, I've even seen the CFO take time to meet with smaller groups to explain key financial metrics (Rule of 40, LTV to CAC, NRR) and dive deeper into how the company is performing. We all know the headwinds and tailwinds that effect CallRail which allows us to all make sure we are focused on the right strategies.
Benefits - The benefits at CallRail are top notch...
-401k with generous match
-Health insurance - The coverage has been key for my family without any issues for coverage...some of the best I've had.
-Equity - Typical stock option incentives based on the company size. Awesome they "Re-Up" equity after being at CallRail for 4 years! The best aspect...we've had 2 liquidity events in less than 3 years where I've been able to benefit from the transactions.
-Time Off - Teams are respectful when you are on PTO and really work together to make sure everything has coverage.
-Continuing Education - Internal programs PLUS $2k a year!!!
Lunches and Events - Pretty typical of a company this size, but they are always improving (like healthier food options)
|
There are no major cons that come to mind but a few areas I suggest to continually improve on:
Sharing Context - Context is king for employees to understand the strategies, mission, and things we are focused on as a company. Sharing more of the WHY with the WHAT will help bridge the gap from leadership to everyone in the company. Continue to share this info in many different ways...I don't believe anything could be overshared.
Career Growth - Even though CallRail has not done a ton of hiring like years past, there are still great opportunities to grow upward and vertically into different departments. True, slower hiring can make it feel there are less opportunities (especially in management/leadership), but there are great examples of people moving from support to product and sales to finance. I feel organizations should keep career growth for its employees top of mind and look for ways to continually improve.
New Managers - There are new and first time managers in the company. This can be frustrating at times, but also an opportunity to help them grow in their careers. Make sure these first time managers get the training and guidance they need to grow.

Company En Route to Crash and Burn
|
|
Great views from the downtown office, Lots of processed non-organic food in the break rooms to keep you plump and complacent. Average to decent benefits.
|
Phew, where do I start. I have experience in large, medium and small startups and enterprises so I feel I have a lot to say in terms of what the heck is happening at this company.
2 months into the position, the bad "vibes" were well-apparent. My director never managed to instill a sense of communication across the team and it became clear that he was not respected because of this. Team meetings always devolved into toxic slandering of other teams that were "stupid". This word got used a lot while I was there and by other teams as well (note: meeting room walls are THIN on 27).
Personal development is non-existent and any talk of it is just a formality. They are tossing out as much extra weight from the sinking ship as they can, including some of their functional parts just because the ship is sinking THAT quickly.
Culture is pretty abysmal. Work events are never during work--some even starting past 7pm, effectively putting you in a 36-hour work cycle, and are always poorly or weirdly planned. Diversity is pretty bad for Atlanta standards. Interestingly, the moment I officially lost respect for the CEO was during last year's Black History Month luncheon where he wouldn't stop lamenting on how spicy the food was in the following All-Hands meeting. If he can't read a room of 100, I'm not sure how he's able to effectively interpret what the board needs of him.
Beyond that, teammates were sterile in terms of personality and entrepreneurship and thus it makes it hard to pinpoint the potential saving grace of the company. Leadership thinks it's sales, which is usually true for most SAAS/B2B companies, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's the customer success team that needs the investment here. I struggled to understand what the customers truly wanted but not because of the members on the CS team, rather due to the lack thereof.
There is a reason the original founder left in 2019. He saw the writing on the wall and knew the business had peaked. The current CEO, previously an American Express VP, has no business leading an entire company looking to expand its product offerings. If the board has any sensibility, they'll remedy this issue of meek leadership ASAP. Even then I have a hard time thinking higher qualified candidates will be able to improve this business.

they mandated a few days in office, the business is losing customers, we charge them even after they cancelled which is not fair. we are losing people because the pay is low. we only get a measly $1000 bonus check IF company hit target revenue. crazy! what can you buy with $1000 now? after taxes, you'll get half in your bank account if you are lucky. management is subpar and only use callrail as a stepping stone to their next job. everyone wants to leave this place. there were layoffs in September so there is surely another layoff coming for the remaining burnt out staff
