I am retiring this week at the peak of my work life. For the past 12 years it’s been my pleasure to work as the Executive Assistant to Mike Cannon. Prior to working at Cannon, I worked for Hewlett-Packard for almost 20 years, and at the time I thought nothing could beat working there. But I would have to say that working at Cannon with Mike Cannon is even better than that. He is creative, inspirational, driven, passionate, and exceptional. He sets high expectations for himself and desires the same from others. He’s inspired me go outside my comfort zone, by setting the example himself. He’s personable, and quick with a story that will put a smile on your face. He shows his appreciation for work well done, especially when you’ve gone the extra mile. And who could ask for more than that! It’s a great place to work, with great people.

I've been at Cannon for several years. I've had the opportunity to work on lot of different projects with different people. Throughout it all, I've found my coworkers and management to be smart, helpful, insightful, and reliable. The atmosphere is open and enjoyable. I feel supported and able to ask questions to management and staff. There is a collegial feel and the desire to do more together for clients and community. I really enjoy my job.

Any negative situation or feeling has been easily remedied once I was able to bring it up to my manager.

I worked in the Public Infrastructure division at Cannon for 10 years. I started out interning there while I finished college in SLO and knew that I wanted to develop my career there. The people fuel the company and culture. Project size and complexity varied, keeping the workload engaging and interesting. They invested in my personal and professional growth and supported me as I became a working mother of two. From the top down, Cannon is an ideal engineering firm to work at.

Cannon experienced a hit like everyone else during the economic downturn and will continue to ride the economic waves, but they have prepared strategically to remain healthy and viable. When people had reduced hours they brought them back full time as soon as they could. The people are their investment.

Cannon has a reasonably nice office, pays middling salaries, and has a reasonably casual stance on work hours, attire, and conduct. It's a very conservative office environment but not stiflingly so.
As a consultancy Cannon does pretty well with work/life balance - in my experience they are not one of the places just working their employees to death and trading them out.
|
Cannon management talks and acts as though the company is a family that looks after its own, however it is most definitely a business first and foremost. When work is short you get laid off pretty quickly unless you can find another way to make the company money. When policies change and it costs you, that's your problem. When you are owed expense reimbursements it can take 30 days to get them, but when its the other way around, immediate repayment is expected. Small things that add up to a clear picture of you being a commodity they are willing to sell but not look after.
The office is a cubicle farm with little privacy, basic workstations, and very limited software tools and a very limited & disorganized library of engineering standards & reference material.
Cannon is not a work place that a non-civil engineer can really expect much mentorship. Structural and civil types will have some strong senior people to learn from but anyone else will struggle to find much direction from above and will have to seek out information on their own.

Cannon is an OK place to work, but not a great place to work. A great place to work shares their successes with their employees instead of spending every penny on appearing successful to the outside world. Doing things like having layoffs at the same time you repaint the office, throw expensive parties, and install new 70" smart screens and touch screen meeting room booking features sends a message to your employees that they are worth very little to you. Invest in your employees training, send them to conferences and courses instead of just talking about it. Make your employees feel like if they stay they will have opportunities to grow, and not just that they are filling a seat as long as they are earning for you.

Coworkers are very friendly, good health care. That is about all the positive things that I have to say about this company

Money hungry bosses not in the best interest of employees and poor pay for engineers. The company claims to have a positive culture but that has never been on display. They expect long hours and the pay is well below average for engineers. Training time is at a minimum. The turnover rate is very high because of all of this.
