The people are experienced, collaborative, empathetic, and fun to be around. C5 has a great process nailed down, so this is a really good place to come to learn how to do agile software development in a thoughtful way. Projects are usually 3 to 6 months (and you're only on one at a time), so you get a chance to see a lot of different companies, code bases, and work styles. There's also a super strong learning culture, with lunch talks and classes, chances to work on tech you'd like to learn, and opportunities to lead as a mid-level developer. A pretty strict "work-from-work" (no work-from-home) policy. It's good for keeping a cohesive culture, but can be frustrating for people who live far away, particularly when they're on a project with a remote team. A variety of projects that one gets to work on. Great way to build a rich portfolio and learn a ton. They want you to succeed at what you do, have the resources to grow and have a lot of fun at the same time. They are truly some of the best people I have been able to work with and you would be crazy to turn down an offer from them. Must have a go with the flow attitude. Pair-programming and TDD is a thing here but they're very pragmatic about it (i.e. not always pairing). The programmers are also heavily involved in the local developer community, hosting LA Ruby, Elixir LA and sponsoring local conferences (EMPEX LA). There's also a real emphasis on professional development. There are bookclubs and shared learning opportunities throughout the week. The employees are multi-faceted, really sharp and I felt I learned just by interacting with my peers. The programmers tend to be polyglots so there are new ideas that flow in from other languages and frameworks. There was also a strong emphasis on delivering quality code and solving technical challenges in new ways (FRP & FP is practiced here across stacks). Also, management tends to put employees first and work to make the environment welcoming. My coworkers are respectful, intellectually curious, funny, and smart, and they care about creating a psychologically safe environment for collaboration and exchange. The hierarchy here is genuinely flat, and consulting work gives you a lot of opportunities to learn new skill sets, work with different people, and solve a wide range of problems. Finally, when they say that work/life balance is a priority, they mean it. The office culture is pretty strict about breaking for lunch, and leaving at 6pm (or earlier!). Carbon Five does a great job getting the best out of its employees while trusting them to manage their own time, and I'm grateful for the opportunities that provides to switch between having more of a home life and working on leadership and deepening my skill set. It is genuinely non-hierarchial. Sometimes you'll be put on demanding projects and trusted to set your own boundaries day to day, and there isn't (for non-developers) a direct reporting relationship that gives you a clear career and skill path. I would love more talks, projects, and pairing that emphasized designers, PM, and development developing an understanding and respect across disciplines. This could speed up projects by helping designers translate their work into a developer friendly mindset. Developers have a very high standard of code quality, and practice lean project management processes (based on agile and xp). Clients generally have interesting problems, and tend to be very collaborative with our processes. Some clients can be political and difficult to work with. My peers are thought leaders - while at the same time, completely humble and authentic. I get time to advance my professional goals by attending and speaking at conferences. There are opportunities to try new technologies and learn from them. And the office perks are pretty great. My salary is on the low end of the industry average. Working with clients on a short-term project does not allow you the satisfaction to see long-term change, or a product really take off.
