Great work, people, and clients - Few resources

- The people are amazing. Directors and VPs are stellar, and it's a great work environment.
- It feels great to be working on such amazing causes, and seeing the work that nonprofits as well as individuals do to create change.
|
- Resources are very tight, but there is little transparency about where money goes. It can be incredibly frustrating and feel like nothing is changing when there are problems brought up.
- Quite traditional in structure and hierarchy, which doesn't feel very progressive sometimes.

Just know what you're getting into

I sincerely believe that Care2.com makes a positive difference in the world. It has effected actual change and will probably continue to do so.

Before I offer any criticism, let me first admit that I really enjoyed writing for Care2.com. It was, arguably, the best job I've ever had. However, if you are thinking of taking a job here, I worry about your welfare. The company is wildly unstable and whimsical. I did contract work here from 2011 to 2016 and went through two roller coaster dives prior to the "disbanding" of the team I was on. (There is evidence that the team wasn't really disbanded, just reconfigured with new writers.) I still have some questions about their integrity when it comes to freelance writers. For instance, I would pitch an petition/blog post about a breaking issue. Four days later, they would get back to me, saying they had written it internally. And the date on the post would be hours or days later than my pitch. I'm not saying you should avoid working here, I'm just saying have an exit strategy. Have something you can fall back on financially if and when they change directions--again.

Don't hire people frivolously. Don't hire bad writers to do your writing. Try to remember that many people build their lives around their work. And when you suddenly decide someone is no longer needed, you're not just robbing them of their work, you're robbing them, at least temporarily, of the purpose people get from working.

I feel really lucky to work in an environment as supportive and welcoming as Care2. The company is generous when it comes to granting employee perks and flexibility, such as remote work, paid leave and free weekly lunches. The employees are smart, collaborative and caring individuals. I've learned a ton since starting this job, and I've also made lifelong friends, who make it enjoyable to come to work each day.

The company advocates on behalf of many different people and issues, and that's something that's both a positive and a negative. As an employee, it's great to work on and learn about a range of topics, but the work can feel overwhelming at times. It's part of our mission to spread awareness about tough topics like animal abuse, and sometimes those campaigns can be very heavy and hard to work on.

I've been working at Care2 over 2 years and have never worked with a smarter or more passionate team. The staff here really cares about making a positive impact on the world which is rare for a for profit brand. I love that this is a brand that is smart, savvy, progressive and not afraid to try new things! The brand also really values work / life balance and provides the team a lot of flexibility and support.

- There is a great deal of diversity across the team. The majority of staff are women of diverse backgrounds. There is a lactation room in the head office and the company culture accepts and supports advocacy for a range of progressive causes from its members and employees.

Best job I've ever had

Working from home, trusted to mostly choose my own hours, makes this job very enjoyable. My actual role is ideal for me as I get to make a difference in the world every day. I'm trusted to make decisions and get on with my job with no micromanagement.
We have interesting discussions about current affairs and politics on a regular basis as a team -- essential to our work as campaigners.
My work (and others') is regularly praised in company meetings which makes me proud of my achievements.
I'm also paid well.

Not being an employee means I don't have benefits that come from being employed, and have to do all my own taxes etc.
Lots of internal calls with large groups that often feel unnecessary.
