Excellent Place To Work

Great culture and teams. Exciting projects.

Often asked to burn the midnight oil, but that's not too bad given the variety of excellent projects. Not the best vacation/parental packages.

Best Company I've Ever Worked For
Carnegie Robotics is an amazing place to work. Management has deep expertise in the robotics industry and really understands what it takes to run a successful robotics company. The work is a healthy balance of R&D and supporting existing products. Employees are encouraged to try new approaches to solve hard problems and push the limits of what is possible. There's always multiple interesting things going on, so you are never bored and wondering what to do next. Coworkers are awesome and foster a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment. In addition to being a technically excellent place of work, the benefits package is the most generous I've ever had (nearly a month of PTO, flexible work hours, full benefits, free lunch and drinks). I've yet to see anything else like it, Carnegie Robotics is really setting the standard of what it's like to work in the robotics industry.
Like any excellent engineering firm, sometimes employees are expected to "push" hard on meeting deadlines. This is not necessarily a con, a good push once in a while makes you feel good and proud of your work. However, sometimes these pushes last longer than is sustainable. On the flip side, management really recognizes this, and sometimes rewards a hard push accordingly with bonuses or extra PTO.
Due the difficulty and complexity of the problems we are trying to solve, it is basically impossible to not "take your work home with you." While I typically only work 45-50 hours a week in front of my computer, a large part of my free time is spent thinking about the problems I'm currently trying to solve. I don't track or charge this time, but if I had to estimate I spend probably another 10-20 hours a week thinking about next steps or reading academic papers to stay on top of things. Again, this isn't necessarily a con, and I think it comes with the territory of working in an R&D environment.
As some other reviews have mentioned, it is easy to feel like you need to work all day to meet expectations. This is especially true in the new work-from-home era. I'm certain management doesn't expect this, but it can be a hard feeling to shake at times. To outweigh this con, be sure to use your PTO as needed to avoid burnout. Management understands the risk of burnout and that is the last thing they want.

Keep doing what you're doing! The focus on making a variety of high quality products really sets CRL apart from other robotics companies. Keep encouraging employees to try new things and push the limits! Carnegie Robotics seems to be on a great trajectory, I hope to continue working here for a long time.

Strong Developing Company
CRL truly cares about their employees.
Medical benefits are really good.
Strong team work style environment.
The company as a whole is technologically advanced and strides to keep on top and ahead of modern technology.
Production processes could use a little better standardization.
We tend to over process tasks and could be a little more simplified.

We could plan ahead a little better and get a little more sense of urgency earlier in rush projects to ease up the back end when it hits production.

Engaging Work
The work is fast paced, you always have something you can be working on. You are always engaged in work, and never find yourself just sitting around waiting for the day to end.
The technical leads are extremely knowledgeable, which yields countless opportunities to learn from them.
You get a say in what project(s) you want to be working on.
Free lunch and a constantly restocked fridge.
Due to the constant stream of work available, you may find yourself thinking you need to work all hours of the day to get everything done. No one expects that of course, but it can be a tough mindset to fall into. This could also just be due to the work-from-home situation though since now home is work. It's important to not burn yourself out.

Great company to work at
Company is not going anywhere, everything is still going full steam ahead even while robotics companies all over Pittsburgh are laying off engineers.
Fast paced research environment mean lots of opportunities to learn new skills/take on new responsibilities.
Doing mechanical work here is great because the internal shops/technicians are excellent and responsive. Its really nice working with great techs because things just go so much more smoothly.
Sometimes things go wrong on a project and you end up working a lot of hours to meet a deadline. That's just the reality of working on projects with significant technical risk in an environment that cares a lot about delivering on deadlines/commitments.

Great Place, Wonderful Management
There a lot of difficult real challenges in robotics and Carnegie Robotics is always pushing the limits . Even if you have a PhD you will be learning something new every day which makes it a really interesting place to work at. The benefits are great and people are always there to help.
The deadlines are sometimes unrealistic which puts a lot of pressure on the employees to work around the clock to get new products up and running. The company can also be really disorganized sometimes which can let some things fall through the cracks.

Great place for starting robotics software engineers
I was a summer intern(remote due to COVID) here mentored by awesome people.
1. It has some really great engineers and scientists. I really couldn't stress more on the fact that there are a lot of great people to learn from not only about robotics but implementing simple routines in a production codebase.
2. The process of logging every minute thing with the robot is really humbling and a great learning experience for how a robotics startup should carry out development and debugging. I learnt a lot from how much each small thing about the robot is cared about.
3. The biggest thing to learn for me was understanding and modifying the production codebase.
1. I found communication a bit lacking with other team members and also amongst interns.
Could be due to WFH though I think some casual zoom meetings would have helped to know a lot more people.
2. Not sure but WLB seemed to be a bit hard to maintain here, not that anyone forces you to work longer hours.
3. Internship pay could be a bit more.

I had this general notion from previous interns who worked here and I realized this myself as well, it is probably due to not having a great website or marketing, but I feel company is a great place to work at compared to what it looks from its digital presence. Something which I felt they should work on.

Opportunities to work on cutting edge engineering problems that no one else has done before.
The leadership team is also very accommodating to the new realities of work and employee interaction during the COVID pandemic.
Opportunity to grow as an engineer and encouraged to learn new things.

Difficult to know how to task myself at times, but this could be due to work-from-home complications.

Unique Culture & the Opportunity to Solve Real-World Problems
Carnegie Robotics has a culture unlike any start-up that I have ever witnessed. They really understand the concept of teamwork across multiple departments. The type of work you do at CRL is especially satisfying because you know you are making an impact on the industry.
Chaotic at times. Must have the ability to wear many hats and be comfortable being pulled in many directions.
