Mentally taxing environment with no clear plan or goal and no diversity
|
The culture at CRL is one of the, if not, the single strangest cultures I've encountered throughout my working career. The company is similar to a start up, but from where I saw things it seems the company is confused about what it wants to do and who it wants to be. Each day I went in it felt like I didn't belong.
The structure of the company doesn't really help with the above. It's sort of an open management where one person can be the project manager on multiple projects, therefore you really don't know who you need to talk to sometimes to get things done.
On another note, one of the most dangerous things my manager would say to me is that, "we are employed because we help the people who actually make the money". That kind of thinking is not great.
Also, I didn't really get a chance to learn much due to the fact that management was unclear on tickets and projects and what takes precedence. I would receive projects from my manager and then from my co-worker at the same time. One day my managers project was more important and the next day it was my co-workers.
Lastly, I struggled internally with the lack of diversity here. I came from DHS, which is all-inclusive and had various genders and races in high power positions. It's very subtle, but when you see things like in my previous sentence, it gives you hope. It says, "maybe I can be there some day". At CRL, this was not the case.

The leadership is conditional to the position you hold.Ownership and management cannot be trusted as they plot to get rid of good ,solid workers with little or no good reason. The company has a history of high turnover.it's best to be on guard for the ax to fall on your head at any time. If you're interested in working for an organization that has zero empathy for how they treat and dismiss workers with the cut throat mentality of a horror movie. Run while you can! Run,run,run,run......

Not without it's flaws, but best place I've worked in my career so far.
It nice to work with talented people I can learn from and feel like I'm improving myself.
Software is not an afterthought the way it can be other places.

You end up working with competent people on exciting projects. Apparently being a manager is stressful, turnover rate from some of them seem high. (2-3 months?). Flexible work hours are convenient for errands.

I have worked for Carnegie Robotics for several years and the job culture is wonderful. I have never woke up and didn't want to go to work. The flexible hours , free lunches , great health care and once a month Friday's off are some of the great benefits Carnegie Robotics offer that many employers do not offer. Some companies may offer more money but being happy and enjoying going to work is more important than having a few extra dollars in your wallet.

One of the things I enjoy about working at CRL is the variety of projects and level of integration with other systems. Especially considering the size of our company, there are a large number of projects, each with unique applications, challenges, and team members. I never feel like I've been pigeonholed, and I'm always learning something new, sometimes it is very specific to my task, other times it is a unique solution to an electrical engineering or software problem that I would have never been exposed to otherwise. There's a good balance between screen time and hands-on work that I really value. I get to see products go through initial design phases...all the way up to full-scale production.
Beyond all of the work details, the culture has been very welcoming and lighthearted. Everyone here is very dedicated and invested in their work, but in a way that keeps the day to day work fun and enjoyable.

If you looking for somewhere to work there are three things to look at.
* The Industry
* The Company
* The Group
If you look at robotics as an industry, it is exploding.
If you look at CRL as a company, it is profitable and positioned to expand.
If you look at each team in the company, employees are happy and working on interesting problems.
In summary, it is the best company I worked at.
