Great opportunities for aspiring artists but low pay

Working at CN is a really good entry into the animation industry. If you are aspiring to be an artist then PA job can offer many great opportunities to network and learn about the production process and the different positions available. The work culture can very from show to show, but ultimately the company itself tries to foster a really great working atmosphere.
|
PA's work really hard and get paid very little. They are vital to the animation process and without them shows would not be able to function. College education, knowledge of the animation process, and some level of experience is needed in order to get a PA position, however the pay rate is only slightly higher than the average retail job. The job does provide benefits and PTO, but the job is fast paced and high stress, which (when combined with a meager wage) can cause some people to burn out. Although the job itself is great for learning and gaining exposure, making the transition from production assistant to artist can be very challenging.

The industry lives on the backs of underpaid PAs. Many people want to break into the industry and would love to work hard for a show and company they love, but that doesn't pay the bills or feed them. If you want good employees to stick around or find the job appealing, then you have to value them. Otherwise, no matter how much they love the show they work on, they might have to find work elsewhere which can pay their bills.

The people are so friendly from janitorial staff to execs! I honestly felt really lucky to be a part of the team I was on. In my experience the work/life balance was perfect, it was expected you do your job but nothing ever kept you from going to a doctors appointment or extending a lunch from time to time.
|
At the end of the day it’s a company, when raises come around they always tell you “you’ll get the standard rate.” It’s expected you’ll stay in your lane. Little opportunity for advancement unless someone higher than you leaves a production. I was told it was possible I wouldn’t be promoted for years unless my superiors chose to leave.
