My experience and skills gained from working at Caster filled up my resume very, very quickly. -Opportunity for travel! Caster's clients exhibit at annual tradeshows in the U.S. and abroad. I attended my first tradeshow after working at caster for 1-year, but others have traveled for work as early as 4-months in. -The team is young and young at heart, and the office strikes a perfect balance between work and fun. -Your work will be recognized, since this is a small PR-firm, you have the opportunity to be involved with many high-profile projects that look great on your resume, such as: writing case studies, attending tradeshows, developing social media/marketing campaigns, forging relationships with top tier media outlets. -You will be on a first-name basis with your boss. -Your schedule can be flexible as needed for appointments and personal time (but I recommend sticking to the script and earning that trust for at least 6-months). -After 1-year, you have the opportunity to work from home one day per week. -Everyone has their own desk with two computer monitors, your own phone, filing cabinet, and any other tools you need to succeed. -You have access to online communications tools to make your job easier. -If it's relevant to your job, Caster will pay for you to attend workshops and training. -Caster Communications office is brand-new, clean, and bright, it even has a full kitchen to prepare your lunch, and it's always stocked with coffee, tea, snacks, and seltzer water. -Collaborative team environment and everyone is passionate, which inspires you to bring your A-game. -You are recognized and compensated for a job well done, and Caster always celebrates personal wins no matter how big or small. Everyone on the team is rooting for each other. -Every team member, no matter how new, is encouraged to voice their ideas, opinions. In this industry, it's important to remain nimble and don't be afraid to speak up and offer your creativity, it will be welcomed and will definitely get you noticed. -When I worked at Caster, we had a pilates instructor teach a private class every Wednesday at the office - the basement is carpeted, fully finished - don't forget your stretchy pants! -Your boss and the entire leadership team are always available to answer questions and hear your new ideas. President / CEO would show up in yoga pants , not having showered, after going to the gym. The basement office was not a fun place to work. Upper-level "loyal" employees were treated much better than new hires, so save yourself the time and look elsewhere for a job. You'll be product pitching for some irrelevant companies. I started at the same time a certain negative reviewer did and I think the difference in our experiences just goes to show that this job, as with any job is really what you make of it. I threw myself into my role at Caster and worked hard to constantly learn more while utilizing the tools and team assistance that was readily available to me. Other perks: - A GORGEOUS office with the latest tech and amenities. Seriously, I've worked in a startup environment and this is just as cool if not better because of its personality and smaller size. We get snacks, Pilates classes taught from the office and lots of beautiful, natural lighting - what more can you ask for? I've worked in a cubicle farm and this is the polar opposite! - Salary is generous and highly competitive for Rhode Island - PTO and paid sick days, matching 401k after one year, healthcare, flex hours and all major (and some minor!) holidays off, ability to work from home if you need it - Ability to travel for work - in the last two years I've been to Las Vegas twice, San Diego and Seattle Caster's a great place to work and there are very few opportunities like it, especially in Rhode Island. It's not necessarily a con but as other reviewers have noted -- this job is not for everyone. You have to be willing to be self-sufficient but a team-player, ready to work hard, and dedicated to pushing yourself to go above and beyond. It's not an 8 hour every day, 9-5 kind of job but if you're willing to put in the extra work it will not go unnoticed! We're growing fast but it is still a relatively small team, so there isn't a large corporate structure to hide behind, as others have mentioned. Learned so much, every client, every project was a new opportunity to test your skills, your creativity and your strategic chops. I learned so much from my peers, clients and media but also my boss who brought inspiration, laughter and guts to work every day. She encouraged us, challenged us and gave us a wings to fly. And when the time came for me to move on, she helped me negotiate and even more lucrative contract. Small team means there is no place to hide. You have to perform, you have to do your share. Not only our the clients counting on us but our team relies on us as well. Sometimes, when your short staffed and trying to hire and you get a lot of duds, you compromise. And then you regret it. Realizing that a new hire is a bad hire is one of the worst feelings, as the agency we juts wasted hundred of hours and resources on the process from hiring to training to realize, they're juts not that smart. It happens. I joined the team as a recent URI grad looking to jump start a career and learn more about the world of PR. Some of the benefits (and there are many) to working at Caster include, flex hours, fantastic compensation, a fast-pace and exciting work environment and a dedicated team of co-workers who are ready and willing to go above and beyond for you and teach you anything they can. Since I started, our team has doubled. We hold regular team status meetings and frequent team outings which strengthens the team both inside, and outside of work. If you're up for the challenge and ready and willing to put the time and effort in, working at Caster Communications is rewarding with just the right amount of fun mixed in. Plain and simple, we work hard, but we play even harder. If you're seeking a job where you can just put in the hours minimum and fly under the radar, Caster isn't right for you. We're a small, yet nimble team and every member counts. Our team is more robust now than it's ever been before and we're more than willing to put the time into teaching and training new members of our team. While currently, (September 2016) our offices are split between 2 different floors, the whole company is still located within one single building and we're working on a solution to consolidate office space to house all our offices on one floor. Finding companies like this to work for, especially in Rhode Island, is not a simple task. Employees who thrive here tend to be excellent communicators (go figure :) ), pro-problem solvers, and team players. We all have different personalities but it works because we all really want to be here! Employees are absolutely well compensated, even intern positions, so I'm surprised that a past employee wrote such a disgruntled review. I would say the catch here is that employees should come in at a certain level of confidence/abilities in PR and business practices. We use Slack for inter-office communication, Outlook for email & calendar updates, and the Microsoft Suite for day to day use. The owner has been in business for almost 20 years and is known for cultivating a rigorous, fair, fun and exciting place to work with tons of opportunity to grow and expand. PR - especially tech PR - can be fast-paced and seem stressful all the time to people who don't know what they are doing. It is not for everyone. The employee who called our firm a scam was here for 3 weeks, barely did anything, never indicated he was having issues learning or doing the assignments given to him and faked hours he spent doing stuff on his timesheet. Also our office has 2 floors, one is halfway below ground (so a basement) but several of our staff work down there, and there's a conference room down there where we frequently have staff mtgs and conference calls. Not exactly the dungeon this person described it as. Also our training program, updated every time we hire a new group of people involves a week of hands-on training, step-by-step guides to accomplish all processes needed to learn basic level jobs and our staff is constantly answering questions and giving feedback. We use Slack to communicate and share ideas/updates which helps keep everyone in the loop (worth noting said employee barely looked at Slack and almost never posted, including when we asked them what they wanted for lunch!) We have an amazing team of people here - those who can operate in a small company that requires you to learn, be quick on your feet and want to grow and advance and continue to better yourself will totally succeed here. If you want to sit back and do a few hours of work a day and hide in the structure of a big company, this is not for you. We work hard, we travel, we have fun parties, group lunches, bring our dogs to work and are appreciated every day. They hire multiple people for one position with every intention of firing all but one ("removing the weakest links," as she called it). The training was awful, it was only three days, none of it was hands on like every other place I've worked at, all while the owner was away my first week. I was then placed in the basement with one other person and given no direction. I was fired just three weeks later. With the owner gone my first week and having to set up firing me in the third, it wasn't so much of a career opportunity as it was a scam. The employees are overly-"clique-y," and everyone is always insanely stressed for no reason-- oh wait, maybe they're stressed because they work 12 hours a day or because they complain about every little detail that doesn't go their way. The biggest let-down was the lack of formal training or direction for new hires.
