Great place to work
If you believe in the mission of helping adults to improve their lives, you will get along well here. Really friendly staff and instructors, relaxed atmosphere, everyone gets work done and seem to enjoy the daily grind.

A learning experience
The Literacy Center in Evansville, Indiana is a rewarding opportunity for those who wish to assist with a nonprofit program dedicated to providing all forms of literacy, including technological, financial, and reading.
The board of directors, as with any board, can be a bit challenging to work with if you are inexperienced with working for a panel of well-meaning critics.

Low standards of work ethic and attitude ensure job security
Meaningful and needed mission. Good benefits package. Personnel changes being made, though too slowly. See review title - job security is a pro, reasons are a con.
Culture of passive aggressive behavior: abdicating responsibility, coming late to meetings, talking horizontally, refusing to communicate, stonewalling new ideas, shifting blame when ball is dropped. Lack of professionalism and stability in key management and staff positions. Salaries are frozen.

Weeds within admin and staff need pulling. They weigh down morale and productivity. Don't allow persons to continue to "play the (I'm sick, etc.) card."

Disappointing end to more than a decade of service. Once a great and meaningful mission.
The people we serve are inspiring. The mission is rooted in a long, successful history and aims to reach an endless population of underserved Philadelphians. Many staff members work with integrity, dedication and strong work ethic. Professional development opportunities. Knowing that we make a tangible impact on people's lives.
Low morale at headquarters is infectious and growing more bitter. It is a joyless workplace atmosphere. The mission was once clearly articulated and strongly upheld. Not anymore. Organizational structural changes threw staff into a frenzy a few years ago, but the glaring problem is that unqualified persons were put into critical director positions and the staff under their watch suffers for it. Turnover has occurred at a high rate in recent months.

Rein in or get rid of complacent, self-serving middle managers. The people doing the work on the service level desperately need a sense of coherence toward the mission. CFL's values are not demonstrated by some members of the leadership team. This adversely affects everyone. Do something now or the organization will continue downward. There are young leaders there waiting to emerge if given the chance.
