Great benefits, great people but lacks a sense of office camaderie
Supervisors were extremely understanding and everyone there is intelligent and passionate. It has a great food culture, and honestly one of the best perks is being surrounded by a work environment that cultivates healthy habits.
Most people were nice but mainly kept to themselves so it was definitely a quiet place to work, however they do have office parties from time to time and it's a great opportunity to talk to other people across different departments but usually senior staffers don't join in.

Organization with a strong mission!
Good feeling that your work is important to the mission of keeping our food supply nutritious and safe. Committed, long-term staff.
Long-term staff means little upward mobility in certain areas. Siloed working atmosphere between program and admin staff. Changing priorities and over-extended staff responsibilities.

Advocacy powerhouse
CSPI is brave, tenacious, and smart. Rooted in science and independent of industry and government influence (financial or otherwise), CSPI is an advocate's dream. It's a place where you can get things done!
You know how I said that CSPI is brave, tenacious, and smart? Do you have any friends like that? Then you probably know that the pros and the cons are just sides of the same coin. Brave can sometimes come off as brash, tenacious as unrelenting, and smart as arrogant.
And the flip side to the organization's independence is that there's not a whole lot of money to go around. The entry-level salaries really are abysmally low.

2017 is a critical year for CSPI. It's the year that the organization's leadership will change for the first time since its founding in 1971. Please hold on to what makes CSPI amazing, but don't be afraid to take on the challenges of the 21st century. I'd love to see CSPI embrace digital, put more emphasis on the happiness of its employees, and actively strive to develop a more diverse workplace.

Shiny on the outside, dismal on the inside
The mission of disseminating and improving nutrition information to the public is compelling and important . Staff are experts in their respective fields and have been instrumental in reducing industry's influence on nutrition marketing.
Office culture is dismal. Although senior staff are experts in their fields, they lack basic social skills and fail even to say "hello" in the halls. The office is silent except for the echo of typing on keyboards. Given that staff is about 30 people total, modeling bad social skills and general unfriendly behavior creates a toxic office culture especially for junior staff . Human resources staff defend and protect managers even when their behavior is inappropriate and verbally abusive. Junior staff are thrown under the bus--most likely because the organization has very little opportunity for upward career mobility so there's no incentive to invest in staff at the beginning of their careers . The only way to move up is to be hired into that position.

Poor opportunities
Work-life balance is good and the atmosphere in the office is relaxed. Great place to work for those interested in US food politics. Good benefits package.
No advancement opportunities and poor level of investment in employees - expect to spend 2 years here before moving on. Pay is very low and it is difficult to live in the DC area on the average entry- to mid-level salary. Job security is weak and feelings of uncertainty are pervasive throughout the organization.

Employee advancement opportunities and incentives would go a long way in increasing motivation. More needs to be done to promote employee retention.

Entry-level Position
I worked full-time at CSPI in an entry-level Assistant/Associate position for about 2 years. The overall experience was positive - the staff here are passionate, focused, and highly intelligent. There was a good amount of flexibility in terms of vacation time, daily schedules, etc. It was an inspiring place to work.
I will say that while the atmosphere is overall positive, it is not the warmest environment. Most mid to high level employees are hyper-focused on their jobs to the point where they don't show much consideration for lower-level employees. Pay is low for the amount of work that they have you doing. Also, there are really no options for moving up within the org.

Have more consideration for the growth of your employees in terms of responsibilities and pay. Based on my own experience and the experience of many I knew at CSPI, there would be far less turnover if employees felt like there was room to grow.
