After working at Centresource for over five years my skills advanced tremendously. Being at Centresource is a constant learning experience as every employee is incredibly smart and talented at their job. Hiring people that believe in the culture and vision of the company allows for a cohesive unit where everyone acts like adults. They take a team first, client second and individual third approach to the company. If you are only concerned about you, this is not the place to work. The work is challenging, but the output is high quality. I enjoyed working on the consulting side of the company knowing the production team members implementing the work were the best. You are offered the opportunity to work across many industries and specialties. The company invests in continuing education for its employees both for their personal benefit and the benefit of the clients.
Working here strengthens so many necessary skills no matter what role you are in. When I joined the CS team I was not expecting to have so much fun, while also being challenged. It is a rewarding experience.

The type of work Centresource provides, being a service company, comes with its challenges. The team at CS does a great job of putting processes in place. With that being said, setting and maintaining client expectations is a tough job and may lead to many internal and external meetings. Working in the agency world is something everyone should do in order to understand both sides of the relationship.

A fantastic place to grow

I've been at Centresource for 5 1/2 years now and I feel very lucky to work day and in and day out with such passionate, talented team members. From the very first day I've been challenged to grow not only into a better engineer, but a better human. These folks make me smarter on a daily basis, and that's what I want out of a job. I also love the inclusive way in which the company is run, bringing employees at all levels into discussions about the best way to approach solving problems. It would be very hard for me to work someone else, given these qualities.

It's a very fast-paced environment and that's not for everybody. Even those like me who thrive on it have to be very careful to take adequate vacations and time to recharge in order to keep up the pace. For a person who thrives on solving hard problems, the place can be a bit addictive. Because it's a smaller company in a mid sized city, we can't always compete with the coasts on salary. If you're looking for San Francisco or NYC salaries, you might need to adjust your expectations.

The ability to work with the best of the best. The team members here -- developers, designers, strategists, project management, operations -- are all top notch individuals. You get to be exposed to many different industries, so those that like variety would thrive. There is also a lot of opportunity to lead -- not necessarily from a people-management perspective, but definitely from a project perspective. Plus there's ROWE, which contributes to amazing work-life balance.

At times it was fast paced, forcing you to be focused on multiple projects at the same time. In this environment, some people thrived while others just couldn't keep up and had a terrible experience.

The best development shop in Nashville. People are awesome - the community of workers are great and make you feel like a family. R.O.W.E. is extremely convenient. I loved the flexibility to work from home or a coffeeshop any time i wanted.

There's never a shortage of opportunities for personal/professional growth at CS, because the company is constantly having to adapt and absorb new technology -- web development and strategy are not markets where a company can afford to rest on its laurels. Very few people come away from their experience at Centresource without having learned a ton. Owing to its size (not too big), the atmosphere is familial, so there's a laidback and comfortable feel..

Workload varies, and can be intense at times. The initial ramp-up to the expected knowledge and skill level can be stressful. The intensity and variability of the workload means that it's not a company for everyone.. People that are accustomed to a very regimented and static routine (typically at larger companies) will typically have more trouble adapting at first.

Centresource's size and industry means that it's difficult to find the balance between implementing operational procedures for efficiency's sake, and still being flexible. The danger is in overdoing bureaucratic overhead that isn't compatible with the break-neck pace of technology.

CS provides a powerful environment for learning and pushing yourself to excel. Working for clients can be demanding, but you're rewarded with a wide range of projects that really help you become a master of your skills.
CS isn't a place for everyone and we make that clear in our interviews. The team only accepts those that are equally talented and hard-working. While this is stressful to those that can't perform, it creates a team of loyal, accountable, and highly talented people - the best in Nashville.
In the past year (2009), we worked hard to implement procedures that ensure both the client and team are happy. Despite a recession year, we added many high profile clients while still ensuring people could grow personally & professionally. Moreover, we're becoming more family oriented as more team members have children.
Beyond the people, I love the chance to work with clients from all over the world. I also love our actual office-space... a Romanesque House built in the late 1800's.

In the past, stress was a major issue. As a young CEO, I was torn between two competing forces: Keep the Client Happy and Keep the Team Happy. To ensure our success, I always chose to keep the client happy - but this creates a very stressful environment for the team.
We need to improve on our Interviewing Skills - its frustrating for both parties when someone can't perform in this environment.
At some point, I'd like for us to have a 401K as the final addition to our benefits - but its too expensive to add right now (disappointing to me as the owner).
