It might not be for you, and that's fine. What I've learned is that it's all about what you value and finding a place that values those same things. Change.org values what I value. I came out of some pretty harsh burnout from my previous role, and I was tired of feeling like I was being over-worked and under-valued to make some rich people richer. The people here are kind and authentic, and they legitimately want to work together towards the mission. There aren't ulterior motives or political power plays being conducted - we're all on the same team, working towards the same goal, which is surprisingly rare, and incredibly refreshing. It's also a very supportive, encouraging environment. We strive for excellence, but not at the expense of tearing anyone down. A lot of the people who work here have backgrounds in activism, and it's incredible getting to work alongside them and learn from them. I've grown more here than I ever did at any of my high-stress, high-competition roles. And my mental health and happiness have also never been better. Lastly, the people we serve are incredible. If you are considering working at Change.org, ask someone about petition starters. Or their favorite campaign on Change.org. This is the kind of fulfilling work I was looking for. Some people don't understand Change.org and see it as silly or ineffective. Admittedly, the efficacy of online petitions was a concern I had prior to joining, and that concern has vanished for me. Our top challenge is that we've built a platform for petitions, and petitions are just one tool that need to be utilized to affect change in the world. There's a lot more work that a petition starter needs to do in order to be successful. Some people naturally understand this better than others, but I think it's a good, tough challenge to have: How do you educate people about creating change in their world? And how do you empower them with the knowledge and skills to do it? We're making everyday people into activists. And it's working. Beyond that, we face the same challenges most companies in the bay area face. The first that comes to mind is communication. It's tough to stay connected with our teammates abroad, and we could be doing a better job there, though we do make much more concerted effort on that front than anywhere else I've worked. Other cons: You aren't going to get daily catered lunch here, but we do have it weekly on Fridays - and it's actually really good food. Our amazing office manager also surprises us with goodies frequently, and we have an A+ snack bar. Our office also isn't the nicest office around, but it's definitely not bad. The location could be better, but again, it's been fine for me. I don't want to backpedal on these cons, because they might be real for you. And that's totally fine. There is a new team at the top and much better vision and strategy from leadership and for the first time, the company has a viable business model through subscriptions and user generated revenue. Lots of places in technology say that they are changing the world for the better, but Change.org is the real deal. Getting to build technology and tools for people to take effective social action feels really meaningful and rewarding. Change.org is a pretty decent employer and mostly tries to do the right thing by its staff. Benefits like 18 weeks parental leave show a real commitment to work / life balance. Now, in 2019, we're re-investing in growing the product development team in a big way. It's an exciting and energizing time at the company. Our mission is one of the few in Silicon Valley that is unambiguously good: We help support underdogs in their fights against established power structures. And the team culture reflects that. You don't just get to work with technologists, you also get to work with highly trained, impactful campaigners around the world who support our petition starters' impact. Our leadership is very open to feedback and non-defensive most of the time -- which is a pretty unusual trait. They're also really dedicated to making Change.org a good place to work -- committed to diversity and inclusion for non-dominant group; encouraging taking time off for vacation or when you're sick; etc. Note that a lot of the older reviews were from when Change.org was going through really tough times with raising capital and/or the old business model was broken. They weren't wrong, but they are out of date: Things have changed a LOT. There's a bit of a cultural bias towards over-positivity -- overpromising, not debriefing mistakes, etc. It's still a pretty white- and male-dominated workplace in the product and engineering team, though the rest of the company is much more diverse. Some of the coolest, most impactful work is done by the country teams in the Global South, but they are split off into a separate legal entity (the Change.org Foundation) and are less integrated at an organizational and cultural level than I would like. People function in an ego-less, results focused manner. The team is open about failed approaches using them as learning points. Mission focused. Helping real people and real campaigns on a daily basis. A global team focusing on local issues. Highly involved leadership team and board which continually creates space to discuss decisions with staff. A staff board exists which submits ideas to leadership. A team which values diversity of background, culture, and experience. Established fellowship program and formal diversity initiatives. Established revenue lines, strong membership program and effective petition promotion. Individuals from many countries who all value and celebrate each other’s work and contributions. 
 Focus on challenges facing us as society and culture today. Openness vs. abuse, political polarization, scaling capabilities to help people in need in multiple markets. Great work / life / family balance. A culture which celebrates doing things smarter and being there for yourself or your family. Leadership celebrates people who take time off to come back refreshed. Strong benefits, paid child leave, and PTO. Still establishing an effective brand and marketing strategy and support for those efforts. Because of team size, getting legal and operations needs met can be challenging. Every Thursday on the Change.org all team call we hear from campaigners in countries around the world about the impact that Change.org petitions have had, and I always find it hard to imagine that there are any other tech companies out there where your work has such a broad impact. This focus on impact and social change has resulted in a team with a broad set of interests, which is great in itself, but also has many important secondary effects. Most people in the company have passions outside of work, and are supported by their coworkers and managers to pursue these interests, resulting in great work life balance. People work hard at Change.org not because their managers make them, but because they care about the mission and their team and want to see it succeed without compromising their personal time. Another secondary impact of this is that people value independent ideas and contributions that can help the company outside the scope of their day-to-day work. I've taken on lots of projects outside of my job description to improve the developer experience at the company, and not only have these projects been supported, they've led me to a role working more directly on the aspects of engineering that I really care about. There are many fundamental challenges to having a tech company that works on social change, which might just come down to the tension between capitalism and justice.
