private:charlesriveranalytics https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=221811 Sep 6th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Charles River Analytics Senior Software Engineer Cambridge, MA The ultimate "Choose Your Own Adventure" There are many companies where you're told what to do and you just do it. This is not that company for most engineering and scientist roles. What matters here is doing a great job at figuring out how to use research ideas to solve practical user needs. There is much more greenfield software development than at many other companies, but also well-crafted core libraries to support your work. If you're a developer, you're not starting from a requirements document - you'll help shape the solution. Ideas from all levels of employee are listened to and considered. The company's focus is on applied research as opposed to basic research, but they frequently partner with US universities to advance and apply cutting-edge research. ALL new projects and ALL new R&D areas are a function of the people involved, and you have a direct impact on your success and that of your team/project. This company is well-respected in its industry and generous to its employees. There's a "valley of death" that all entrepreneurial organizations experience that is also real here. At this company, the challenge to turn a successful applied research effort into something that can benefit thousands or millions is a huge hurdle that isn't often directly funded. If you have the wherewithal to navigate the valley, your efforts will be worthwhile, but people who expect that research prototypes will instantly turn into marketable products will need to manage their expectations. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 0.0 5.0 4.0 4.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 221811 Open Thank you for being open and for your commitment to employee-owners. 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 20.0 Jan 15th, 2021 07:14PM Jan 15th, 2021 07:14PM Charles River Analytics Travel & Leisure

I had an absolutely horrible experience working for CRA. Even with all of the pros listed above they were so outweighed by the negatives. HR is not at all concerned with the wellbeing of the employees and I highly discourage anyone from reaching out to them if they need support as they have repeatedly made situations worse for employees in regards to employee mistreatment. Even if you are good at your job, don't play the office politics and stick to yourself you are continually surrounded by a toxic environment and complete unprofessionalism on all levels. I would not recommend working for this company to anyone. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NO_OPINION 3.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 2.0 4.0 1.0 221811 Open It would be a waste of time to give advice to CRA management (including HR) because I don't believe they are open to change. The people in management positions are comfortable and don't care about anything besides the bottom line. Not only do they turn an eye to coworker on coworker mistreatment but they also send a clear message that this toxic culture is okay as long as you're the one with seniority or contribute heavily to bringing in more business. 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 0.0 Jan 15th, 2021 07:14PM Jan 15th, 2021 07:14PM Charles River Analytics Travel & Leisure

private:charlesriveranalytics https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=221811 Feb 27th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Charles River Analytics Cambridge, MA Employee Owned Tech Company CRA is a highly innovative place. What makes it even more unique is that it is 100% owned by all of the people that work here. It has a very laid back environment with flexible hours, free food/snacks, and a beautiful facility. CRA is a place that will constantly challenge you with new and exciting problems that are making a difference. They seem to be doing the right things to develop and keep their people. The employee ownership culture plays a large part in that. It takes some time to get use to the many project, acronyms, and business model. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 0.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 221811 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 1.0 Jan 15th, 2021 07:14PM Jan 15th, 2021 07:14PM Charles River Analytics Travel & Leisure

There's a lot of room for growth, whether its technical skills, business development, or leadership roles. It's also a great size - large enough to have a support staff that is fantastic, but small enough that you don't have to deal with huge levels of bureaucracy and red-tape that is common at larger organizations. This also plays well with the personal growth and fast-paced research side of things. The benefits are fantastic, with great flexibility, vacation time, health benefits, and many other unique offerings. Research isn't for everyone, and there can be projects that don't end up with a clear transition or success. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 0.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 221811 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 6.0 Jan 15th, 2021 07:14PM Jan 15th, 2021 07:14PM Charles River Analytics Travel & Leisure
private:charlesriveranalytics https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=221811 Mar 24th, 2019 12:00AM Open Open Charles River Analytics Engineer Cambridge, MA There's some good, plenty bad Flexible hours and a laidback atmosphere can make this an OK place to work. Project work can be unique, exciting, and challenging. In most cases you are supported by likeminded colleagues who are smart and passionate about their work. I believe the greatest asset of this company is the support staff – they are fantastic. A typical “scientist” will stay busy writing proposals and will lead or support multiple projects. “Engineers” will often perform much of the work and support several projects at once. In my opinion, despite the company’s strengths, due to inconsistent leadership and a lack of self-awareness among management this is a very challenging and uncomfortable place to work. There seems to be few mentoring opportunities, so it can be a tough place if you’re recently out of school or transitioning from another field. The company’s lack of self-awareness combined with little to no accountability for personal behavior, even when behavior is appallingly inappropriate, can result in an atmosphere that is dysfunctional and unhealthy. Bottomline, bullying by co-workers and managers alike is common. Sadly, HR are either not empowered, or simply unequipped to handle these types of issues. This may explain the high turnover rate. Project work can feel like it lacks purpose. As with any company ymmv. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NO_OPINION 13.0 1.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 221811 Open Be clear and honest with your employees about your business model and the metrics that are tracked. private:charlesriveranalytics https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=221811 Dec 22nd, 2018 12:00AM Open Open Charles River Analytics United States USA Disorganized and potentially toxic -- proceed with caution Casual work culture, potentially interesting projects, There seems to be a bit of a divide between scientists and engineers. As an engineer, I often felt like more of a tool at the disposal of scientists rather than an employee with thoughts and feelings to voice. On more than one occasion, I was assigned to a project for which I lacked the appropriate skills, even after voicing my concerns. Generally, I am very willing to learn new skills to accomplish tasks, but considering the amount of time I was given and the scope of the projects, I felt like I was set up for failure. Projects are often poorly planned, too ambitious, and lack direction. As a result, I was often expected to work extra hours at the ends of projects to try and compensate for the poor planning at the beginning. Project leads often failed to communicate all the details of projects to me, leaving me with a fragmented view of the end goal. People often work and send emails over the weekend, setting the expectation that I do the same. When I gave my two weeks notice, I was met with passive aggressiveness and felt largely ignored and even a bit antagonized as I tried to finish up my remaining work. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 0.0 NO_OPINION 9.0 2.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 2.0 2.0 221811 Open Place more emphasis on project planning, and don't alter the scope of projects after much of the work has already been completed. With more organization, you'll be able to avoid the intense "crunch time" that occurs at the end of projects. When employees voice their concerns, listen and be willing to be flexible. This would vastly improve morale as people will feel valued and heard instead of ignored. If it is not already being done, I also think it would be very helpful to introduce training for managers as many other companies do. Being a senior scientist/engineer and being a manager are two very different skills: I think it would be beneficial to emphasize the employee-manager relationship as being two ways, where the manager mentors and tries to foster growth in the more junior employee. 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 1.0 Jan 15th, 2021 07:14PM Jan 15th, 2021 07:14PM Charles River Analytics Travel & Leisure
