There was minimal to no training so it was really hard to grow in the position. Keepers did not have time to train new assistants. They are very non-understanding with disabilities, will just assume you're lazy if anything goes wrong or if you aren't doing everything exactly how they want. Fired without any sort of notice, no email, no text, no in person conversation. My schedule was just suddenly deleted and I couldn't access my account anymore. 0/5 would recommended finding another company to work for, it's just not worth it even if it's your only choice. Doordash and Instacart will make you more than this job, because they also delete days from your schedule after already showing up for work. Just to be told to go home and with no compensation for their inconveniences upon you. You also need to pay for all your work clothes which is a good 60 bucks out of your part-time paycheck. Although the Zoo is incredibly fast pace and you have to be able to jump in and help when needed, the appreciation comes from above, below, and even other departments. We truly work together to make the world a better place. It is really fast paced and as a non-profit we aren't millionaires. We show up to work because we are passionate. We are paid fairly in a nation wide survey of non-profits in the same bracket as our operating budget, so it's not unheard to be compensated the way we are. Some departments and individuals in the Zoo are treated with a bias and are allowed to do things that no one else would. A few of the upper management are fairly hypocritical and take advantage of their positions for their own travel benefit. All in all, the cons of working at the Zoo are so incredibly low compared to the pros and every work place has cons. It doesn't always feel fair to those of us lower on the hierarchy, my advice is to keep things fair across the board. "High-school-like" environment where cliques are established and no one is friendly towards each other unless you work in that same department. Most of the employees in the animal department and administration think they're better then the rest. Management gives no directions and tend to "throw" people into a new position without proper training then scold harshly when job is not done to their standards. If any one in upper management does not like you, you will go no where and have a miserable experience. They under staff and over work everyone. Upper management knows of shady things that are happening but does nothing about it because they are all "friends". They choose to believe a guests word over an employees. The president has no idea what goes on with the zoo or the employees. Horrible compensation for employees unless you're upper management, then you make a ridiculous salary for working at a non-profit.
