Incredible culture

Great culture, room for growth, and an easy to sell product

Love the remote work life, but would be nice to have more off sites.

Mixed Feelings
Unlimited PTO (no catch—seriously) and fully remote
Data provided to clients is inaccurate thus resulting in major issues down the line long term when selling products. We had a lack of client focus and were just told to sell sell sell. The entire team got wiped out due to lack of leadership guidance on a brand new team. We were not all sales people and I wish our strengths were used properly instead of turning into a sale team. Some amazing talent got cut due to the lack of support for this team.

I suggest you listen to some of the team members below leadership. There were a handful of red flags that I saw and brought to management that could have help structure this new team. I understand I wasn’t a manager but you have to listen to ideas from everyone especially in a startup. Open the door for conversations to flow and ideas to spark.

Utterly mismanaged
Good individual contributors passionate about software.
The “leadership” at Chowly is practically non existent and full of people both bad at their jobs but desperate to cling to power.
I watched multiple employees complain about new management hires who have been completely absent from their duties months into the role.
The response from leadership: “we can’t admit we made a mistake hiring these people so deal with it”.
The result: a huge exodus of engineering talent resulting in a skeleton crew managing multiple services.
The fact that the CTO position at a technology company has been empty for over a year speaks for itself.
Avoid!

- Remote - Unlimited PTO - Cool product idea
- Engineers were expected to be able to work on any part of the system with not much specialization. Hopefully that changed recently - The company is only interested in what you can do for them and not you developing in your career as an engineer, so any career development is up to you - A small group of engineers retains most of the legacy knowledge but are extremely busy as a result - Tech and product leadership leaves a lot to be desired, this engineering culture felt more like a 90s sales company with middle managers that delegate their job duties and not like a tech company in '23 - Mixed messaging regarding what you should focus on. Support or roadmap? Roadmap or support? - Watched a lot of really good talent leave because of all of these things

Watched a lot of great talent leave
-Sales leaders and team members were great
-CEO needs a lot of help in leadership. Watched great talent taken for granted, leave, or be let go. Change needed to come from the top but most of us looked up to non execs and I've heard they're no longer there
-Execs care more about how company looks rather than making reliable software. They came down hard on sales instead of making the software better
-I've worked for other tech companies and this was the most manually run company I've worked at. Should be tech focused internally and externally and chowly just wasn't

Focus on the good people you have. Some newer leadership came in and made big changes but not good ones for the company. Inbounds went way down in 2022 and made it hard to stay.
