private:chronicleofhighereducation https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=477050 Sep 17th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Chronicle of Higher Education Washington, DC Does not value staff & talent The benefits are some of the best I've ever had - the 24 vacation days are hard to beat. Leadership doesn't value its talent - before Covid they were eager to bring in new talent for fresh ideas, but they didn't take any of their suggestions. Change is driven by erratic decision making because a source of revenue they rely to heavily on has been dried-up. This creates mad scrambles with no process or organization to get work done. Usually this would be a great opportunity to be exposed to something new, but it's hard work, not smart work because decision makers will move forward with work without an understanding of how to do that work. In addition to perpetually ignored concerns about a lack of diversity in the staff and leadership of a publication, the political culture of the different departments makes the environment unproductive and forces you to either cave and be unprofessional, or "just do what you are told". One result of the political culture is that approval for hiring vacant positions requires arbitrary review. In a company that at full-staff is no more than 150 employees, this means you are constantly in a position of doing the work of two jobs. When providing updates on financials, a regular update shared proudly is how vacant positions are helping to keep expenses low. This is probably why the company culture that has been created is never addressed, even in spite of heavy loss of talent. Surface-level, the company is great if you want to get in and out in less than a year, but when you finally are ready to leave, you'll most likely leave with less skills and be behind in your career. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NO_OPINION 3.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 477050 Open Respect your employees and demonstrate value to them behind empty shout-outs during zoom meetings. 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 6.0 Jan 16th, 2021 02:30AM Jan 16th, 2021 02:30AM Chronicle of Higher Education

private:chronicleofhighereducation https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=477050 Feb 12th, 2019 12:00AM Open Open Chronicle of Higher Education United States USA Excellent Benefits Great PTO (24 days). Flexible work schedule. Fine place for early or late career. Great job if you aren't looking to rise the ranks and just need a role with flexibility. Some very smart people at the organization. Entrenched, unimaginative senior leadership. Little room for growth. Long term outlook for organization is bleak. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NO_OPINION 1.0 3.0 5.0 3.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 477050 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 0.0 Jan 16th, 2021 02:30AM Jan 16th, 2021 02:30AM Chronicle of Higher Education

private:chronicleofhighereducation https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=477050 Oct 12th, 2018 12:00AM Open Open Chronicle of Higher Education United States USA Good experience, but some people can wear on you Most people work seven hour days because of children and such. I worked 8-9 hours but it felt good when I had writer's block to just go home a bit early and regenerate. There are way more awesome people than bad (but the bad are pretty bad). More generous than other companies in terms of vacation, if you like having extra vacation. Salaries, unfortunately, aren't as generous. Even though it's an open work environment, people are pretty good about being respectful of your time and know when it's a good time to chat. More thankless than other jobs. There's more directors than there are actors. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 1.0 APPROVE 6.0 2.0 4.0 3.0 0.0 2.0 0.0 477050 Open Look out for the people who like to throw others under the bus for their own poor planning. Embarrassingly low pay, they work you to the bone and make false promises to keep you on your toes.
