Excellent pay and benefits, including outstanding health benefits and a good old fashioned pension (CalPERS). Employee learning and development is supported. Great place to learn and grow your career. Good opportunities to collaborate, contribute ideas, and make an impact on the organization. The City Council is supportive of staff and doesn't micromanage our work. Leadership supports work-life balance. Flexible or alternative schedules are supported where possible (depends on the role/department).

As is common in public sector workplaces: we are continually trying to do more with less and working on teams that we wish had more funding to hire more staff. The organization values creativity and innovation, but these things require time and bandwidth... lean teams and big workloads can sometimes get in the way.

A Municipal Organization Afraid of its Own Shadow

Excellent pay and benefits for management level employees. Excellent employees although many of them seemed defeated and their discontent contributes to an overall feeling resignation among employees. Management employees speak highly of the organization while line employees are obviously unhappy and uninspired.

This place will make you run away. Major culture of fear and a lack of openness throughout the organization. The organization is stagnant and led by a reclusive city manager. A lot of brushing things under the rug. This is not an organization for problem solvers because imagination is not a value here. Instead its led by an inexperienced management team that is more concerned with covering things up. Employees with ambition need not apply. A lot of "CYA" mentality is observed in the organization combined with a noticeable culture of fear.
