Great place to start as your first job
|
|
It's a small firm, around 40 employees so you get to know your coworkers really well and they're a great group of people. You're also thrown into a lot of different accounts covering a wide range of communication areas so it's a fantastic place to get your feet wet into the world of communications where you learn a lot.
|
The pay is less than ideal, especially compared to similar comms firms around DC. Staff is overworked and associates regularly work 10-12 hour days, which is expected by senior staff. Lack of personal/work life balance.

Interesting client work, but things can improve internally
|

- big names to work with and really interesting client work
- collegiate environment with smart and hardworking colleagues
|
- big divide between staff and senior management
- lack of diversity in leadership
- there's a bit of age discrimination--if you're younger than 40 and especially a woman, your worth is undermined at the company until you prove others wrong
- small, which can both be a pro and a con --but becomes a con when senior management is also trying to run the company while juggling client work, which can get disastrous

- hire more staff who are capable of running the admin side of things so when junior staff need their help, it doesn't become a dramatic family feud ordeal with senior management getting involved from the get-go
- learn to trust your staff, you hired them so let them shine
- hire more within the company; hire more female staff in management roles
- communicate more often with staff
- clients are important to the business, but sometimes, you have to stand up for your staff every once in a while--if not, the whole idea of CLS being a "family" becomes nonsense

Smart people. Everyone works hard. Collegial and collaborative environment. You will learn a lot, particularly if you are more junior. Not a typical vapid PR firm ... try to be more strategic for clients.

Everyone is busy ... not the job if you want laid-back bankers hours. Some clients more difficult than others, but you find that anywhere.

CLS is a great place to start your carer. There is a lot of room to grow. You learn a lot about different industries. They have a lot of interesting clients and you get to do substantial work even at an entry-level position.

Tough environment
|
|
CLS is really good at keeping their clients happy. They produce good work and have staff from many different walks of life who have a good perspective on communications and DC policy areas.
And the kitchen has a margarita machine.
|
CLS is not good at keeping their employees happy. People are overwhelmed, overworked, and frustrated with the constant turnover -- more than half the staff has turned over in the past year. Junior staff are expected to complete mundane tasks with little to no time to do them because they are always being asked to fill in on work that is well above their level; senior staff maintain a very clique-y nature that means you're either one of the cool kids or you get pushed out. It is a culture dominated by white men -- even though the majority of staff are female, the top two levels of management are entirely white men, so the lack of diversity is very apparent. There's very little transparency with lower-level staff and people often know that they are being whispered about behind each others' backs.
And they never actually use the margarita machine.

Focus on staff retention and bonding so that people don't keep leaving and you can stop worrying about hiring and training new people. Make sure people feel appreciated, both by saying thank you and by paying them competitively -- we know your retainer and spend money on behalf of the firm all the time, so we know the lack of pay equity present. There are so many good people at CLS -- all you need to do is channel that and it could become a really great place to work.

Definitely a great place to be an Associate/SA/MA. You get to work on a variety of accounts and industries which is crucial.
|
One or two Partners/SVPs are really not great to work with. You encounter that at every firm but there are a couple of eggs that are especially rotten which is why they lose a lot of talented SA/MA level individuals.
