Campus facilities are very nice. Value is placed on enrollment, visibility, and political gains for leadership, all at the sacrifice of student service. Please take a moment to realize that the majority of positive reviews are left by student workers - not professional staff and faculty. This points to the fact that CMU relies heavily and disproportionately on student employment. While it is great that so many work opportunities are available to students, the simple fact is that CMU has not increased the number of staff to accommodate the growth in enrollment. As a result, individual service to students continues to decline. Not to mention, employees regularly complain about doing the job of at least two or three people. That's only the tip of the iceberg of problems with CMU as an employer. CMU prides itself on being innovative, and from the outside, the campus certainly appears that way. However, what CMU propagates as innovation actually translates to poor academic practices and complete chaos. Visions and values of CMU are not based in education, but rather in business and politics led by it's president. CMU continues to replace educated and experienced scholars with business professionals that will fall in line with it's profit, infrastructure, and monopoly philosophies as opposed to implementing best practices well known throughout other universities. Additionally, CMUs desire to dominate the community and appear to be on the cutting edge of everything means that employees experience a constant state of chaotic change. CMU has a band-aid culture - any and every change lacks proper research, strategy, and resources (unless, of course, they're building something). Bottom line - CMU has seen tremendous turnover in the last few years, and the issues are well known among those who work there. Sadly, fear dominates, and speaking out against leadership is beyond risky. A recent campus culture survey indicated as much.
