A lot of finger pointing

It looks like people were encouraged to put extremely positive reviews in to boost CSBS' score. There is a lot of technical debt due to the organization's lack of understanding on how to develop a product roadmap. One IT executive in particular sits in her office for the most part and only sends emails to staff about how they manage their time working remotely. Communication between the Policy side of the house and IT is dysfunctional and major delays have occurred with their flagship system, NMLS, and other applications because they gather business requirements and try to get every stakeholder to consent before moving forward, which is virtually impossible. It may be good experience for a career in government affairs, but there's too much infighting and finger pointing within IT which made it an overall negative experience.

After working at CSBS for few years, I can say that the IT department has gone through a major transformation in the past 2 years. The IT department is continuing to change and enhance ways to improve communication internally and externally. It’s a place where employees are encouraged to bring ideas to the management and help implement those ideas into solutions where applicable.
Overall, CSBS is a great place to work. Employees have a good work-life balance and benefits are amazing! Management is very understanding when family matters may impact your work. CSBS offers many benefits including education assistance. The CIO encourages staff to further their education, as well as take training and certifications as needed for the job. CSBS invests in their employee's success and growth.

CSBS is a busy place and its IT department is growing. If you don’t like to stay busy and struggle to keep up with change, this is not a place for you.

After a couple years of working at CSBS, I have seen a monumental shift in the team collaboration and productivity, at least within the IT department. We are implementing leading edge technologies and are pushed to continuously improve our operations, much like a larger tech firm. Most importantly, employees are treated well, respected, and the benefits are fantastic.

There are existing political differences between the various entities within CSBS and even within IT, making progress and decision making difficult at times.

If you work in the IT department you get 2 work remote days a week which is great for work life balance as it allows you spend more time with your family. Health Insurance is amazing and 401k match is ridiculous! I put in 5% and the company matches with 12% for a total of %17 of my salary going towards retirement. Not to mention yearly bonuses, they pay for transportation, home internet, and cell phone bill. The company is still relatively small, but the IT department gets to work with Enterprise grade products. Did I mention the 401k?

There are still some bottle necks in the IT department that are slowing down progress.

Seeing the organization transform from what is used to be and what it is today is noteworthy. There is more communication and belief within the organization that we have been delivering excellence and continuing in transforming IT and achieving much success. The overall values at the organization have also evolved over the years and this is becoming a great place to work. With strong leadership work life balance , partnership, delivery, collaboration and communication have immensely improved.

Positive Strides One the Past Two Years

Reviews that are older than two years no longer seem valid. The company has made great strides in establishing teaming relationships among the business and IT and providing an engaging and collaborative culture. The IT organization has retained and hired extremely talented people over the past two years. The rebuild of IT has greatly improved moral and performance across the board.

Position titles are frequently inflated to allow for competitive salaries.
Decisions are sometimes slow to be made.
It's a small company. There are upward mobility opportunities, but don't expect too many.

My name is Thomas Bayer. I joined CSBS in late 2016 as Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer. After my arrival, CSBS IT began a Digital Transformation focusing on our People, Process and Technology to improve our performance, results, culture and environment. With the growth and change CSBS IT has seen over the past several years, we are excited about having created a strong and innovative IT department enabling us to meet the future needs of our members.

CSBS believes that a diverse and inclusive culture that values and leverages input from all staff produces better decisions and outcomes. Forty three percent of our IT associates are female. A key factor in our future success is our culture and we are advancing positive change through our Culture Action Team (CAT). The CAT has engaged the entire organization in creating and implementing key culture change initiatives. Additionally, our Women’s Interactive Network and our Diversity and Inclusion Working Group identify areas for improvement and implement initiatives to help us evolve.
At CSBS, we make it easier for state regulators, to securely share data, ideas, collaborate and get work done faster. Ngoc Vu, Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Officer is leading our Digital Transformation and Strategic Data Initiatives. She has successfully positioned us to be on track to meet the objectives of our Vision 2020 strategic plan. Vision 2020 is a series of initiatives from the Conference of State Bank Supervisors to modernize state regulation of non-banks, including financial technology firms.
By 2020, state regulators will adopt an integrated, Fifty State licensing and supervisory system, leveraging technology and smart regulatory policy to transform the interaction between industry, regulators and consumers. Achieving this vision should result in a regulatory system that makes supervision more efficient by recognizing standards across state lines. These actions will better support start-ups and enable national scale while protecting consumers and the financial system.
