Very smart people and very crippling culture

Everybody at ConnectWise is very bright, and most of them are nice friendly people too. They also pay pretty well for the Tampa area.
|
The culture is very traditionally corporate (I mean that in a not good way). There is an obsession with formulating expensive and detailed plans for the future only to have them destroyed a few days later. There is also a lot of policing in the sense that you are not allowed to do things outside your job description. It all makes for a very boring company where you can't change anything, help others, take ownership; you are just a cog in a machine.
On another note, there is a lot of snitching (not to imply actual guilt). I have had personal incidents and have heard experiences from others where somebody would report somebody to their boss for some under-performance without confronting them, even for things that were not their fault or misunderstood. And for clarification, I was a five-star employee at my job before this one: I am not some loser that has a tendency to under-perform.

In the past, I have exceled at jobs where I was given freedom to improve things. I think that the authoritarianism of Connectwise drove me to hate it. I want to own the product; I want to do impressive things. I felt like I was under-utilized a lot, partly because I would have to be there for a long time before I would be allowed to do anything having any freedom.
That said, my advice to management is a cynical NOTHING. Don't change a thing. From my understanding, being a soul-crushing company correlates pretty well with profitability.

3. Majority of employees have good hand-on on the technology and domain so you get to work with intelligent people 😉
4. Follows agile strictly and one can see all the agile processes here
5. HR organises many events to keep employees engaged
6. Since the merge, it has become a better place

Company culture is not good because of the management and their mantality -A manager who respected employees work life balance was fired because of his non strict and non sarcastic behaviour
1. Managers literally think that the engineers working here are labours and they do not have personal life too
2. Mangers do not have basic etiquettes to deal with sub-ordinates, you can be humiliated infront of everyone. Basic people management skills are major missing in the management here
3. Managers do not value your personal time and do not respect the work hour policy
4. Management is gender biased,I have seen women employees are treated as if they are in debt of company and their technical knowledge is always doubted
5. HR can not take any action against any Manager, in this regards are HR are helpless
6. Work life balance is not that great
7. Right from top management, mantality is same

The company is really good, only managers are ruining the reputation. Break out of your conception that people will be more productive if they are being pressurised or treated strictly. Be realistic with the employees, expect them to do things which are doable in the expected time. Create an environment of trust and fun and all your employees will work happily. Don't always expect them to be available for company 24*7. Everyone is mature enough to understand responsibility, expectations lead to disgrace. Make the company HEALTHY place. And see if company events can be made little professional and comfortable by restricting your engineers from over-drinking and spoiling the event like unprofessional immatures.

Went from dream job to something I hate

great people work there, I've learned a ton about my field. My job allows me a good work life balance as well as I'm not checking emails or working after I leave for the day.

Since the TB acquisition things have slowly gone downhill as a current employee. I'm in a department that doesn't bring any money into the company and lots of people are scared of being farshored because it's cheaper. The culture has changed from a relaxed attitude to very corporate. I understand companies will change as they grow but it is starting to feel like jobs I left for how I was treated like a number on a spreadsheet. CW is not at that point but heading that way.
COVID's also been unexpected and obviously had a poor impact on the economy so I don't know how much of my cons arise from that. I have been expecting a title change and pay raise for a while and feel that I do way more advanced work than my title or pay. I'm scared to push this that I will get let go. I haven't left due to uncertainty in the job market with COVID and I'm just kinda in limbo hoping for a raise soon.
Diversity is also a con in executive leadership. It is all older white guys and like other reviews have said "good old boy" feeling and one female. It is changing a bit in middle management but what would really show it to us employees would be on the executive leadership team.

With the US workforce starting to move to a WFH situation in general I hope that we will do things together again. One of the things I miss the most is the team working together in person feeling, the nerf wars, the random catered lunches and after work events.
When COVID is over and it's safe (still a few months away) I really hope you can find ways to have teams meet up in person once in a while. Teams meetings and calls are not the same and lack personality. Happens with family and friends as well.
