Best Organization, People and Mission for Artists who Believe Children are Our Future
This is the most challenging & rewarding creative position I have ever held. The children I came to know during my first semester here embody all the attributes of Creative Action's Core Values. It is a fantastic place to learn and grow as a Teaching Artist for all disciplines!

Continue the good work of making the world a better place for all people one student and artist at a time as we grow in understanding and appreciation of each other, valuing every person and their culture while encouraging one another to raise our voices and take action and personal responsibility for truth and justice to build bridges of kindness between people and the planet we share.

Slightly unprofessional
You get to work with some of the best artists in Austin and encourage youth to become better people. Also there isn’t a drug test so anyone could essentially pick up a job. They spend a good amount of their money on their parties with open bars and easy access to liquor so if you’re underaged and you ask the right person you could easily score a drink. *obviously this is a pro if you’re into that sort of thing I personally do not condone this behavior especially from an organization that works with youth.
*You don’t get to choose where you are located and if it’s out of your way or you have any complaint about that location they will cut your hours. (Also leave you at that location you complained about forcing you to leave the company)
*they claim to hear you out but the moment they feel it won’t be in their best favor to make a change they could care less about your opinion.
*they are somewhat slow at getting supplies and if you want to have a successful class you’re better off getting your own supplies for projects.
*they give you high hopes in creating amazing projects with youth and when it comes down to asking for simple supplies it becomes a budget issue.
*if you ride bus or ride share that comes out of pocket. This organization claims to be innovative and caring for issues around the community. Yet they don’t believe in ride share.
*you’re only given about 20-25 hours a week and part of that is “prep-time” each day you work you’re given an hour/ if you teach two classes you’re still only given an hour of prep-time.

Untrustworthy organization that undervalues it’s employees
Certain employees (upper management and other teaching artists) are very kind and helpful, but you have to navigate through a lot of fake and rude people to find them. Pay is okay but not really worth it.
It’s chaos working as a TA in the after-school programs and summer camps. You have no choice of what school or age group you will be placed with. Site coordinators and upper management are often stressed and incompetent. The teaching artists seemed the most knowledgeable and capable people. However, these employees’ talents go ignored. I have a masters degree and continuously produced great projects with my groups but was hardly ever recognized for my work. Tried to apply to a few full time positions that opened up there and was never even given an interview despite my degree and prior teaching experience. The worst thing was the unfair and frankly illegal ways the organization tried to not pay TAs for their time. You aren’t paid fairly for your planning, and I often wasn’t paid to stay late even when my site coordinators asked me to. Once one of my site cords flat out did not pay me for a meeting. Resources are extremely limited both with the supplies the organization has on hand and the classrooms you are given. Also many of the kids in the program are privileged and have severe behavior problems because their parents don’t discipline them. The organization’s mission statement is all over the place, trying to tackle too many things and expecting too much from TAs without fair compensation and relevant training.

Hire kinder and more competent people in upper management and as site coordinators. Don’t ignore applicants who have relevant experience just because they are from outside the organization or are not theater-based educators. Listen to the advice of your TAs who know the most about the problems of their sites. Hone the mission statement. Get better technology and visual art resources. Place TAs close to their home and get site coordinators to try to let TAs choose their age groups. Most importantly: start paying TAs fairly for their entire time (even when working early/late). And pay TAs fairly for unit plans and daily lesson plans!

Pretty average nonprofit experience
-Creative environment, friendly staff, flexible hours
-Low pay
-Benefits were seriously lacking
-No HR support
-Expectation that staff will work more than 40 hours without compensation
-Felt like there was no safety net for conflict resolution
-Seriously lacking diversity in upper management
