Overall fantastic, very specific problems

You get an lot of training and and impressive amount of support from staff. A vast majority of the staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, and you genuinely feel like you belong to a community from day one. Most of the people there really believe in the mission of the organisation, and it's a great place to learn new skills and work with some really cool people. The job itself is engaging, fun, and challenging in all of the good ways.
Unfortunately, because the administration tries to do everything, expectations aren't always clear and questions don't get answered in a timely manner. I had to figure out a lot of things in my first few weeks on my own, and it hasn't improved yet. That can be unnecessarily stressful at times.
Pay is good for the hours you put in except for prep time. (You only get paid for an hour and you consistently do more than that). Trainings are paid and you have opportunities for community engagement and learning seminars that are paid as well.
The company tries really hard to be inclusive and socially aware, but falls short in a lot of ways when it comes to individual cases. I know they're trying, but it takes a while to get issues actually addressed and when you do, there's not always actual change or meaningful change, which is disappointing for a company with such a strong message of inclusion and responsibility.

Creative Action is the greatest for artists with teaching experience. It's mostly after school care for only 3 or 4 hours a day. You get discounts on gym memberships, free counseling sessions, and a lot of assistants with how to deal with kiddos.

A great place to work and volunteer
|
I enjoyed volunteering with young adults with autism in Social Creativity as well as working with elders in the Continuing Creativity program. I had support, encouragement, and freedom to develop my ideas in both programs. Working with such a dedicated group of artists and educators made this one of my favorite professional experiences.

Great networking opportunities

I loved this job. It was a great learning experience. I had the opportunity to not only connect, but work with youth in the Chicago land area. I learned a lot of office work, facilitating lessons, and meeting wonderful possible youth leaders. It is the experience I needed to I could switch job fields.
