A lot of passionate fans who work there.

Too many to count. Deep cultural issues that will probably never be resolved.

The most demoralizing tech company in Silicon Valley that I’ve ever worked for
|
|
401k matching
Annual bonus
Some good people who’ve stuck around
Free subscription to Crunchyroll / VRV
Fun, cute Netflix/YouTube -like industry (video/Media) and vibe
$200/month commuter benefit
|
Very old and outdated system, infrastructure and mindsets
No attempt at retaining talent - Crunchyroll lives off of “Passion Pay” basically exploiting the fans who were lured to come work here over other places that offer much better lifestyle, pay and career growth
100% top-down approach to every decision ever
Leadership and decision-making very much removed from the actual audience demographic
No real ways to voice concerns or speak up about anything

Please get rid of obsequious, passive and demoralizing middle managers who consistently fail to display any capacity to lead and inspire. Without fundamental changes, every decision just seem short-sighted.

Love going to work
|
|
Great culture, tons of benefits onsite: gym, snack wall, beer on tap, diverse catered lunches and dinners, team outings, and the company is still growing and improving as best they can.
|
Open office environment was a bit of an adjustment for me, leads to a lot of distractions.

Crunchyroll is Ellation, read the Ellation reviews
|
|
In short, there are still a few smart, humble, passionate people at Crunchyroll/Ellation despite the turmoil at the company. Free lunch and dinner four days a week, a very nice office and opportunities to have a big impact on the anime industry.
|
"Crunchyroll" is not a separate company. It's a product that the company Ellation maintains. The business teams for Crunchyroll are somewhat separated (though they're still in the same office) but engineering and many other departments are all part of Ellation proper. Read the Glassdoor reviews for Ellation. They don't bode very well.
Petty politics and sabotage have resulted in layoffs for some of the most senior and well-respected engineers, as part of the company "growing" by buying up its outsourcing partner (whose CEO was conveniently ALSO the "interim CTO" of Ellation at the time). Now the rest of the senior engineers and lots of other people are leaving. There's a huge amount of distrust between ground-level employees and management.

For Crunchyroll specifically, it might not be a bad idea to split it off into its own business unit with dedicated product, engineering, QA, support, etc. At least then you can shield it from the poisonous culture you've cultivated at Ellation proper.

Crunchyroll and Ellation are the same
|
|
Used to be a good place to work. I wrote a long review of this place once, I think one of the 3 stars (or maybe 4 stars), and I genuinely believed in the mission then
|
Go check the Ellation Glassdoor before you decide anything. Ellation is the "parent" company of Crunchyroll and while that may lead some people to think that perhaps Crunchyroll itself is a standalone unit within Ellation, more or less sheltered from all that's happening, it's not. Pretty much anyone who worked on Crunchyroll worked on the new product VRV as well, it is the same people the same teams (there was not enough headcount to split into two), so anything that is described happening to Ellation employees is gonna be the very same for this listing, even if they look separate in Glassdoor

A once bright star now a supernova
|
|
So much camaraderie, socializing, shared interests, etc. However since Ellation became prominent over Crunchyroll there wasn't the same vibe. It's one thing to love your work, but equally important to enjoy little moments with people around you. It's what give a workplace real soul.
|
Lots of uncertainty with where the company is going and proper strategy to achieve that. Too much ephemeral shifts cause delays and decisions based on questionable metrics. Culture of fear so people keep their heads down without questioning. Turnover rate is high and company sweeps departures under the rug.

Lots of room for improvement starting with open transparent communication, minimize excuses and smoke screens. Set the foundations for success and see it through. Go with forward movement not backpedaling. Equal accountability & contributions within the company. Leaders should inspire others with their actions and lead by example, not words.

This feedback is from a past employee and I can imagine many changes have taken place from time of employment to current. \r\n\r\nAs an organization, we are very transparent about the change, and have truly embraced it in the past six months. Our attrition rate is below the average and healthy given our rate of growth. Turnover rate being high and swept under the rug is not accurate in my perspective. While turnover is a sensitive topic, and from an HR point of view, we are unable to give full disclosure due to the sensitivity of the topic. \r\n\r\nIn addition, to promote transparency, we have been very open to allow for anonymous feedback, public feedback, open questions forum each week at All-Hands, and our CEO is open to discussing change as it occurs. There was a time in the past 6 months where we were really working to put the process in place whereby people could communicate and share, and I feel since we have done so. I am proud of our progress, and am happy that we are very open with communicating with our broader team. \r\n\r\nTo the former employee, I would say thank you for the advise to management. The advise is constructive and we have been taking these measures to ensure improvement in communication and transparency. The evolution of this company in creating an authentic brand, bringing on strong leaders, and keeping communication open and honest is something that we are constantly trying to improve upon. As with any high growth environment, it is important to constantly reflect, and take the feedback seriously. As we scale, we are constantly assessing that we are keeping true to our mission and values.", "responseOriginal": null, "countNotHelpful": 0}]

Gone really downhill
|
|
Free lunches and dinner 4 times a week. Probably should list that as a con as it's to keep people in the office working while in crunch.
Competitive compensation.
401k matching.
Stock options.
|
No work life balance.
HR is catty and talks about employees negatively behind their backs.
Desperately needs talent. High turnover rate. Had two people quit without notice recently.
New employees often left with no guidance or onboarding.
Way too many meetings and meetings about meetings. Meetings are just a complaint session where nothing gets resolved or accomplished.
The project is missing technical leadership that would solve all these issues from tech to project management.

Stop trying to recruit everyone with a pulse and focus on quality people. Get someone in here that can actually set the project in the right direction. You grew too fast once you became Ellation. Seriously lay off the 20% of under performers as its really burdensome to pull the dead weight.
