Losing Touch
|
|
Fellow non-management employees are great.
There are even a few managers that genuinely care and look out for you, its just a shame that these are the exception.
Hours are reasonably flexible, they are good about trying to build a schedule that works for you.
You earn Vaca time at a good rate
Bill Crutchfield can be found at the office every day, super nice guy, ridiculously smart and always makes time to talk to you if you approach him with a question.
|
How the sales team bonus at the end of each month is a joke. There is no consistency or clarity to the system at all. What metric they use to calculate your bonus changes all the time. There are also a bunch of hidden rules to how your metrics are tracked. And to top it all off, how much you bonus is entirely dependent on how everyone else does. Sell $80K in one month, great! so did 25% of the sales team so your bonus is a step above the median at best. Sell $120k next month, awesome! Oh 40% of the team did as well so your bonus is actually less than it was last month. Nothing like working harder and making less money for it. Its not as simple as just raw dollars out the door, but this is the gist of how it works. Challenging/questioning this systems results in higher ups threatening your job, and people have even been fired for it.
Crutchfield also seems to be losing its identity. Always positioning itself as the place you can go for expert advice from real people and enthusiast. Its what we tell customers is what separate us from equally priced competitors like Amazon and Best Buy. But they hire people with zero background knowledge and experience and say they will train them. While at the same time cutting the amount of time new hires get in training by more than half what it used to be. The amount of incorrect info I see people passing along is staggering.
Doesn't matter how friendly your Advisor is if what they are telling you is wrong and you buy the wrong thing.
They have also recently added a AI Bot for chat, how that is supposed to create a "personal and emotional experience" for the customers is beyond me.
There is also no room for advancement beyond maybe the occasional team lead position. The entirety of upper management is full of people that have worked for the company for 25+ years and are extremely comfortable with their jobs and are under no pressure to do nothing more than than have been doing since day one. Just a bunch of yes men that will only act if Bill Crutchfield himself says he wants something specific done.

Compensation has to be looked at and re-evaluated across the board. Not just in sales; Customer Support, Order Support and Tech Support are all criminally under paid, especially compared to Sales who makes about twice what they do on average if you can bonus halfway decently. And I would say Sales has the easiest job of all of them. I would cut Sales base pay substantially to be in line with the other departments and switch the broken bonus system back to commission like it used to be. Every customer that contacts us assumes we are commission anyway.
You must stop and take a look at the company as a whole and the direction its going in. If you want to just be a high end Best Buy then you are on the right track. But if you want to be something better, if you want to be "The Best" place to buy consumer electronics then you must look at the current practices that are in place and compare them against your core values. Stop cutting corners, good enough was never good enough before; so why is it now?

16 years of high expectations and loyalty...reciprocated.
|
|
Training and support, teamwork, management that listens, Crutchfield sets a high bar for customer experience and employee performance and responded in kind with loyalty, friendship, support, continuous training and feedback. The pay and benefits are good, friendly work environment, work from home option, pet-friendly work place, outstanding employee purchase program. But the best part is the people. Your co-workers in all departments are customer service oriented, even when the client is the employee (thank you IT Services). The level of expertise and professionalism is high. You are NOT just a clerk taking orders. You are creating a relationship with the customer to identify and serve their needs, NOT to necessarily sell the highest priced product. This company is a well recognized and awarded industry leader. Team playing is expected and you will find the support his offers YOU to be incredible. The customer is the winner with this effort, but you will be pleased. I enjoyed my time here greatly and will sorely miss it.
|
Realize this is a retail business that will ask you to put in additional hours to help with call volume, mandatory at holiday time. Performance bonus structures change quite a bit, with adequate prior notice, but you best get good with an Excel spreadsheet to see where you stand and how to improve. Even so, there is a learning curve to this and it requires constant vigilance if you want to make a few extra bucks.

Point systems in advisor bonuses are too tight together and small, seemingly random daily events can hit the pocket harder than I liked. I never understood the changing priorities these represented. I am hopeful that the company will continue to eye enabling work from out of state, but realize this is MY issue and presents challenges to the company that may have limited benefits TO the company. Still, in today's environment especially, I have trouble understanding how a world-class company is stopped at the state border when it comes to employment when the technology to reach beyond is already deployed. I love Crutchfield like family. Overall, I beg, do not change.

Great company, treated amazing during my tenure there.

Generous time off and benefits package, great sales experience, treated very fairly by management.

Privately owned company with a conservative business approach so few opportunities for advancement, poor work schedule at the agent level.

Great introduction to customer support

Incredible benefits for hourly staff. Great culture with almost no drama. Good leadership structure and flexibility from leaders.

A lot of people love it here, so not a lot of people leave. Upward mobility can feel non-existent from an entry-level position.

Great place to work
|
|
They care deeply about the customer. As for employees, family is important, work-life balance is important, good technological environment to hone your development skills and they fully support teleworking options.
|
Benefits could be better. No 401K match, but there is a "profit-sharing" component that the owner uses to make an annual deposit to your retirement account. Slow accrual of PTO, no separate sick leave policy.
