Fast paced is not a buzz word here, it really is fast paced!
|
|
- You’ll learn a lot in a short period of time due to how fast paced it is and that’s experience you may not get elsewhere.
- Promotions are fair and based on merit.
- The people are lovely and good - met some of the best people here!
- Office lunches and lots of snacks.
|
We’re often referred to as a “sports team” and not a “family” which I respect as some other companies call you family and go on to treat you horribly.
That being said, I’ll describe the things that makes sport teams successful below and how we’re tracking.
- A great coach (lead): Great coaches hire great players, teach and train them and most importantly trust that they’ve taught them enough for them to deliver. At Curve the CEO and Exec team are too involved in the nitty gritty of things which shows fundamental issues - do you not trust the team that you hired to deliver? Or do they just posses bad management skills of micromanagement?
- A cross functional team: in sports, no matter how good you are as a stand alone player, you need your team members to be just as good and to be in sync to land a win. There are lots of great teams and departments at Curve but there’s no synergy. This again points to a management issue as most times department heads seem and sound really out of touch especially with the CX teams which should be the heart of any company.
- A loyal fan base: this again is pivotal as the loyal fans in the stands cheering on is the right fuel for success. At Curve we have a good customer base that love the product but lots of erratic changes and features that don’t do what we promise they would has made us loose a lot of them and some of the ones who have stayed have downgraded to our free tier (like sports fans who have become apathetic and won’t pay to see a live game cos what’s the point).
- Good strategy: Any team that will be successful or win a game has to have a good strategy and actually leave enough time to implement it and see if it works or not. Things are changing for the better now but previously strategy wasn’t always communicated clearly. More importantly we don’t leave a lot of time before the next thing. There’s a lot of pivoting in quick succession that shows a lack of planning and good strategy implementation.
Ultimately every day is a sprint here and you’re told that if you can’t keep up, it may not be the best place for you. Sprints are good but that can’t be the pace all day everyday, it gets tiring and leads to burn out.

Excellent place to prove yourself and learn
|
|
Curve gives people lots of influence and responsibility early on in their career. This makes for a very exciting environment for young and hungry people.
|
The density of hungry high-achievers means the bar is even higher to stand out and earn advancement and recognition but this is encouraging!

Backend Software Engineer

For the eager to learn and perform only
|
|
If you are willing to learn, continuously, you will go far here. I came from a large organisation, so much thinking was done for me, I thought I was a software engineer, cause that was the role, but in actual fact I was just more of a mindless developer. Until you get the freedom, accountability and trust required like you do at Curve, you realise how much more you can learn being at a small, challenging company.
I do think it is a sink or swim company, hence a lot of the bad reviews, seemingly by entry level roles. Those who join with experience, own opinions backed by real life experence, they do well here. I have seen many people climb the ladder at Curve, and I have seen people whine and moan and leave and frankly, these are often the one's that were not good enough and struggled to perform.
You will be found out here, if you want to sit back, not learn and do the bare minimum, you will be found out. Working here benefits those who's work does the talking.
Would I recommend working here, only if you back yourself.
|
Some decisions, like the removing of insurance, doesn't strike me as well thought out and I get the impression the other leadership members will protect each other, show a united front.
The glassdoor score, I think there's been people who didn't quite live upto expectations and leave poor views of the reality of working at Curve, meaning more good hires are detered so then some of the not so good make it through and we end up in this cycle of those bad hires then leaving and leaving a bad review. If you filter by Job Function you will see a lot of departments are very happy at Curve.
Pay is very good, and so is the annual leave, but the pension scheme is lacking and there's not a bonus scheme (though I would always choose a higher salary over a bonus scheme)

High application response rates. They are very quick at responding to the applications. I immediately got the rejection email, just around a second after the "Thank you for your application." email.

An inept, egocentric executive team and CEO
|
|
The team you'll work with will all be lovely, but ultimately will always be struggling under the pressure applied by upper levels of management within the company
|
The company is lead by an arrogant, out-of-touch executive team who are driving the business and it's employees further into the dirt with every choice they make.
Despite numerous issues with the app and as a result, customer happiness, the exec team focus on nothing but short-term gains in order to constantly patch up a product which is ever more resembling a leaky, sinking ship. At no point in the last 4 years has time given to the engineering teams to fix basic problems, as the leadership at Curve would much rather keep adding feature after unnecessary feature to a very shaky core-product.
Due to this, increased unhappiness with Curve's customers is adding an increasing pressure on the customer support team who are swiftly running out of options and the tools to help as the backlog off app issues grows.
Instead of recognising this however, the exec team resort to blaming anyone other than themselves for the issues within the company, preferring instead to utilise tactics of gaslighting and scare-mongering on the teams they lead. This has all come following the referral to the Customer Service team by the CEO as being "second class citizens" within the company on numerous occasions.
While the CEO and COO remain in place, Curve's culture as a company will continue to be a growing shadow of what it once was and the metaphorical "ship" shall continue to fill with water as the litany of issues gets ever worse.

CEO is a dictator - openly said he couldn't do a day in customer service. I've never experienced more awkward town halls in my life.
CEO had a hissy fit and offered people a payout to walk out - then backtracked and offered a pay out for people to stay and not take the original offer. LAUGHABLE.
