Avoid at all costs...
|
|
Good benefits, great place to be if you are new the industry and trying to build your resume.
|
The Executive team is not sales friendly and can't seem to get out of their own way. Egos and arrogance has lead this one-time leader to be lagging in the industry due to lack of innovation and execution. Probably less than 25% of sales people make their number due to the inability to sell the solutions. Most of the time is spent trying to save customers and talking about a stale roadmap that is close to 4 years old. The company missed the early needs of customers and failed to see where the market was going because they didn't believe EDR was necessary. Unfortunately it left them light years behind and in a losing position. It will likely take at least 2 years to right the ship, if that's even possible.

There was a time they were innovative
|
|
They built a brand around the possibility of prevention.
|
They blew their opportunity for explosive growth by building products that couldn't compete with market leaders and that really didnt move the needle for enterprises. They had poor leadership in Engineering that cannot produce a product on time consistently.

Emotional reaction to issues is not the way to succeed. Getting rid of people who constructively challenge decisions is not the way to succeed. it was sad to see the company slide so far down and really not have a stellar exit like other companies.

Pay is lousy compared to industry competition. When HR was questioned about raises, told to ask managers, who said it was HRs decision. Passing the buck seems to be the norm.
Skip-level sounds like a great idea, until the inevitable retaliation comes back around. 360s were abandoned because some egos couldn't handle it, that was a mistake.
Engineering is understaffed and overworked by managers who neither respect or understand the challenges of their reports.
Career movement is kept to extreme cronyism, and not even multiple quarters of positive reviews can change that stance if you're not inner circle.
Any and all of these issues are brushed off as not being a true believer.

Really look at your values and whether people are following or not. Implement 360 reviews to get the whole picture. Stop being so top-heavy and so sales-heavy and fix your tech debt. Stop brushing off the issues and fix them or you'll lose more good people to bad management. The CEO either is complicit in all these issues or oblivious, either way it's not good.
Oh well, it's all Blackberrys problem now.

I worked in the Portland office, so I didn't suffer the terrible work life balance that my counterparts at HQ (Irvine) had to endure. I saw my fair share of poor engineering management, though. That and the inability to properly recognize outstanding engineers who were just quietly putting in good work are the main reasons I chose to leave. I hoped the impact would shake things up.
I questioned whether this executive staff could take a start-up to the IPO finish line. I was wondering if I should even bother purchasing my options. That was until they went for the cash grab and sold(out) to BB. I'm sure some there will be happy to cash in as well. Others (especially those there less than a year) might not be so happy to get BB shares when they finally do vest.
You did a good thing selling to BB. Now, do your best to retain the talent that will likely jump ship in droves by recognizing those that have put in WORK, not just those that have been brown nosing.
