Not the best place, not the worst

- Students are awesome to work with
- Many of your colleagues are excellent
|
- The school is run on a shoestring budget and you often don't have simple office supplies
- Poor leadership / constantly changing leadership
- Directors in units have barely any experience and the staff members are left to run the departments despite low pay
- Lots of diversity issues
- Discontentment from students

- Plenty of training, so no experience necessary.
- As the headline suggests, the name on your resume will get you to your next opportunity!

- Geisel is an affiliate institution of Dartmouth College, which though a member of the "Ivy League," has curiously produced NONE of the following: Nobel Prize winners, no Medallion for Scientific Acheivement, or Lasker Awardees. If you are looking for trailblazing inspiration and mentorship in your career as a future scientist or medical researcher, it would serve you well to look at peer institutions.
- Although there is plenty of training, the bar is set very low for entry-level employees' qualifications. That said, if you identify as an ambitious person, you might find it challenging to work with colleagues who cannot see the bigger picture of higher education because they never attended college.
- Diversity issues are paid with lip service, ie.) you will work with colleagues who share a name with the person who signs your cheque.
- Departmental quality varies across the institution. In some departments, PI's and chairs boast high EQ's and are natural managers with intelligent support staff. In others, PI's and office support personnel are incurious and unremarkable making Geisel's reduced place in medicine not a surprise, but an inevitability.

Excellent benefits. Good access to Dartmouth libraries and other resources.

The financial setbacks are far from over. The ceiling remains low in terms of advancement for staff positions whether one is hired without a college degree or with an MD/PhD. This explains the "traditional" approach to management. As others have noted, senior administration operates without transparency, often with knee-jerk reactions to opposition or suggestions for change.

In terms of recruitment and diversity, stop and think how much homogeneity does this institution want? Listen to your faculty. Create staff positions mindfully and stop creating entry-level research and staff positions without room for advancement.
