Good in Theory, Not Quite Perfect in Practice
The CEO is friendly and down-to-earth, as are the other members of the team in the office.
The company culture is seemingly lax, and everyone understand when life that interrupts work happens.
(Aside from hectic times of deadline crunching), you get to choose the projects you get to work on.
The higher-ups were incredibly transparent with both the failures and successes of the company. It was incredibly refreshing to be provided with such insights that are normally kept secret; as one manager put it, "It's normally you show up to work one day and the company shut down and they didn't even tell you". I'm glad that was not the case at DecisionDesk.
While the company culture did *seem* sound and the company seemed like it was a hip, young startup, the more I worked there, the more I realized there was an unfortunate amount of politics behind the scenes that caused a lot of employee turmoil, even at times leading to some inter-team quibbling. Whether that was due to the company being in the midst of some organizational restructuring, or an inherent characteristic of the company, I do not know.
Additionally, while my work output and ethic were perceived as high-quality by my direct managers who I reported to, the higher-ups were not always able to qualify the work that I had done (because of a general distrust of us lowly employees, it seemed like) and as a result were sometimes unsure about my performance.

Real work is better than perceived work. A former co-worker once told me that "the people that object the most to remote work for employees are the employees that work the most remotely themselves".
There seemed to be this belief from the higher-ups that seat-in-butt hours was what made productivity, which is ironically the opposite of what I was told in my interview.

Flexible work environment, decent office space.
This place will con and swindle you. False promises made by a CEO who left to a start-up called Wisr started by his ex crony who was also totally inept and talked to folks like they were the help. Dude is still on the board.
Stay away from this place if you're smart and value your sanity.

This company understands people
If you want to work for a fast-growing startup in the Cleveland area, DecisionDesk is one of your best bets. It is a fun, young company that is really trying to improve the college application system (where there has been little change for a decade). The company just moved to a nice new office in Lakewood, and is very flexible about taking time off when needed. Despite growing fast recently, the company as a good core of people who get a long, and a surprisingly flat organization structure. If you're smart and work hard, there will be opportunities to grow in the organization. It would be tough to find a CEO with less of an ego than John Knific. He knows he is young and still learning, and takes advice from everyone around him.
Higher education has a relatively long sales cycle, so the business model requires some patience on the sales/marketing side. However, these efforts are starting to pay off.

Part of the great culture now results from the amount of interaction between teams. Try your best to not let the company turn into silos if the company continues to grow.

High-Growth Startup
DecisionDesk is a high-growth startup in the ed-tech space. Not a "sexy" space, necessarily, but this team is good at growing and taking on new verticals. I'd expect them to continue growth. Management is great at sharing in company's successes, and providing personal growth opportunities to team members. Lakewood, OH location is ina really vibrant, active neighborhood.
Not as many "frills" as some other startups, but excellent culture and fun environment.

Awesome SaaS startup
Great work environment, driven people, awesome product that you can really get behind as an employee and truly want to bring to market.
Not too many downsides to working at DecisionDesk. They probably don't have the greatest office perks of any startup in the world but they make up for it in drive.
