Immediate opportunity to litigate cases. No micro-management. Good benefits.

Very few experienced attorneys are there and the ones who work there rarely have time to mentor new attorneys. So if you are just graduating from law school, you will have to create opportunities to learn from more experienced attorneys. Management will reprimand attorneys first and ask questions later, if at all, when a client or prosecutor lodges a complaint. Several opportunities for lateral moves but very little room for advancement and salary increases are so minimal that not worth mentioning.

Depressing environment, high turnover rate
|

The best reasons are as follows:
1. Clients
You get to build relationships with people and help them at the most vulnerable and stressful time of their lives. It takes time to earn their trust of course but once you do, its worth it.
2. Pay and Benefits
The starting pay is very competitive and the benefits are good, especially if you stay long enough for your pension to vest.
3. The location is pretty good. It's right by the courthouse and the office is fairly new.
4. Training is paid for and encouraged. You never have to worry about CLE's or books or anything.
5. Staff: Some of the attorneys will help each other out with motions and advice. Unfortunately, the turnover is so high you can't get attached for too long.
6. Never a dull moment. You will see it all and get a wealth of experience because you're pretty much your own admin, investigator, counselor etc.

1. Lack of Support
If there is a problem with a DA, a Judge or a client, you will be called into the office and threatened. It's a very bullying and intimidated management style and you are micromanaged. It's also cliquish. You need to eat lunch together and kiss up to the right people to avoid a hostile work environment. And you probably still won't fit in.
2. Trials are encouraged but the outcome doesn't matter so much. It's not a win if your client gets life and they could have plead out to four years. It takes a strict constitution to be able to go against the grain (and the office) and do what's best for your client anyway.
3. Heavy workload - You can have between 80 and 150 cases at one time which means a lot of long nights and weekends. It leads to burnout and chronic stress which can affect family and health.
4. Heavy turnover - if you don't fit in (and you probably won't if you're compassionate), they will literally drive you out to try to get you to quit. It's a very hostile work envioronment.
5. Depressing - the system is very ugly. The more committed you are, the more invested you are in your client, the worst it effects you physically, mentally and emotionally. You see the worst of the worst happen to the most vulnerable people. It's not for the faint of heart.

Salary, Coworkers are good people. They work well in a team environment and get along well. Lots of smiling faces and good cheer.

There is little room for advancement and when opportunities do become available they are normally given to people from the outside. Management does not readily accept input from the staff.
