do not let DESC zap your compassion. do not work here
|
I have worked for DESC for almost two years now and still have not received my one-year pay increase. Outside of the medical benefits and stellar RC staffers, this organization is a mismanaged mess.

Union discrimination is management't culture
|
At DESC I was punished repeatedly for standing up for myself and discriminated against for standing up for my LGBTQ+ residents and for standing up as a union member for my co-workers. I worked hard to create policies that challenged the status quo of ignoring violence between residents, as management did whatever they could to stifle progress and when the bargaining team fought against targeting of union members, they did everything they could to intimidate those union members. In addition, they fought recognizing the LGBTQ+ community in their stats and have a long history of racist promotion and disciplinary actions. Change does not happen if you do not hold people accountable.

Poor Management
|
The organization is very disorganized and doesn't bother to communicate directly to employees when issues occur. Management talks to each other and procrastinates addressing critical problems. Employees depend on administration to assist them yet there is only so much that is allowed and instead of adjusting their system to meet employee needs, it is expected that they fall in line. Leadership skills in people employed in management roles are lacking and it is difficult to reach out to them when their help is needed. My team didn't have a supervisor for several months and the person that picked up their duties was not effective. The neglect and poor communication was obvious and resulted in poor training in new employees and masking the real problem by pushing responsibilities on other employees.
High turnover is acted as if it is the norm and it's clear that their system adjusts accordingly instead of listening to their employees and looking at the flaws within their own organization. Problems that may appear minor reflect the company's disorganization that result in frustration for employees, clients and their families. When I first contacted them during the hiring process I was hesitant to commit because every time I called the number given to the person hiring for my role, I got another person's voicemail and when working for the company, I heard from clients who experienced the same problem for their case manager and were also frustrated. When I said something about the issue, it was brushed off as if it's normal. There was an incident where a client was able to walk into the office area through an unlocked door that should have only been accessible with an employee badge and stole an employee's purse yet several weeks later I found the same door open again. It isn't clear that people in management roles take the mission as seriously as they should. During the handful of times someone from my department met with me, they compared the operation of the area I was responsible for as driving a spaceship, which seems insulting to their clients considering that they are dealing with serious mental health issues and homelessness.

Life-saving work for life-saving people
|
I’ve been here for five and a half years in various front-lines positions. DESC has set out to help the people who need it the most, not the people who are the easiest work with. Prioritizing the most defenseless and disabled, this company saves and betters the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors with supportive housing and case management. I have felt very welcome as LGBTQ, pronouns are in email signatures, and I’m a big fan of their highly flexible time off benefit and the supportive management culture. This job can be stressful and cases can be complicated, but you’ll find yourself on a team that cares to help as much as you do. Would apply here again if I went back in time for sure.

At the end of the day, its all worth it.
|
I've been employed for almost 7 years and I'm having hard time leaving, even for a job with better pay. I love my clients and really feel I make real change in their lives.
DESC has gotten better with in the last 2 years with getting employees more involved, both work related or not. Your can participate in pride parade, holiday party, skills workshop performed by your peers and self-evaluations for career advancement.
Unfortunately DESC is challenged with paying case-managers and clinical support specialist competitive wages, but it's not just DESC management, city contracts are just as much to blame.
This is a great place for growth and to experience social justice and or in-justice in real time.

Lack of leadership
|
My experience with DESC was a complete nightmare. I worked in a brand new housing project and the lack of organization as well as leadership was actually frightening at times. It was "the blind leading the blind" The police stopped responding to 911 calls from the facility. Just to be clear, the housing projects are simply modern day mental institutions. The bottom line is the dollar.

Amazing coworkers and culture, low pay
|
The culture is incredibly inclusive and everyone uses evidence based methods for treatment. It's really hard to change shifts though, even if it's health related. Supervisors are generally awesome. More maintenance duties are expected than initially expected, mopping floors is common. PTO accruement is really high.
