The salaries are not competetive . In addiction, the work load is excessive. The diocese requires 6-8 classroom assessments per subject each trimester. In addition, assessments for homework and classwork are required. This data must be entered on to the Option C site in order to generate report cards. The report cards require grades, checklists, and comments for each student in each area. All this generates excessive and duplicative paper work for teachers. Think carefully begfore accepting a position, as you will be working with uncertified teachers, and without a way to negotiate fair pay and treatment. The health insurance was much better than my current plan in another Catholic diocese. The plan included excellent hospitalization coverage, preventative care, prescription drug coverage and life insurance. Training for safe environment was comprehensive- they responded to the 2002 scandals with prudence and accountability. In the last position I held, I felt safe and comfortable. Over the course of 7 years, I received an annual cost of living increase, which ultimately increased my salary by 20%. Tight circle, and everyone somehow knows everyone. Pension vests retroactively from age 25. Lack of performance evaluations at consistent intervals. More payed vacation or retreat time. Let employees under 25 vest in their pension. It would be better if the wedding and funeral stipends were considered part of the job description of musicians instead of additional compensation, or this money was counted towards Social Security. I actually regret leaving Brooklyn. Health insurance is way better than other dioceses. Refurbish a few empty properties and offer discounted housing to employees. It was challenging to find an affordable apartment in a safe, convenient neighborhood.
