Great colleagues. Great potential to teach what you feel is important to students within the modules. Facilities are not bad at all.
|
Too many hours, little or no leadership in the department. Parking for staff is difficult and makes life more complicated than it should. Many students are also disengaged and it may be there 2nd or 3rd choice. I had one student who did it even know what the course was about!!

I loved working as an instructor. Class sizes are limited to 30 or less, I averaged 16 - 20 students per class, classes last 5 weeks.
Instructors normally teach two classes each day, they can be at times in different subjects/fields. I enjoyed having the variety of students to work with!
They offer "Gift of Knowledge" to faculty/staff that allows one to attend one of their degree or vocational certificate programs for free. Occasionally the Gift of Knowledge program can be given to family members.

I considered teaching two classes per day a pro even if I was teaching different subject matter. I did not like teaching "splits" with a morning class from 8 - 12 and a night class from 6 - 10. It made it difficult to maintain a work/life balance.
Student population can affect the number of instructors needed. This can lead to a stressful work place because less populated courses can be removed from the education plan.
Allowed problem students to dictate outcomes. Part of the accreditation process is dependent on number of graduates vs. number of enrolled. There is autonomy within the class to manage the curriculum within legal guidelines; however, students are not always there for the right reason and holding them accountable was difficult at times without upper management support.

Empower your instructors, if there are lots of problems a review is in order, but do not immediately put the instructor in a defensive position by automatically siding with the student. Part of the goal is to help the student prepare for life off-campus and accountability is expected by future employers.
