Great first-lab experience, not long-term growth
|

For newly graduated students, Edge offers great environmental lab experience with a big variety of prep methods and analyses. The start/end time is quite flexible for certain roles (some are dictated by sample holding times). The people working in the lab (techs, analysts, and receiving staff) are wonderful & very fun people which makes that aspect of the work environment very enjoyable. The medical insurance is quite good, the 401K match program is competitive, and there are options for additional insurance programs that the employee can choose to participate in. The environment is also very casual and laid back, which helps balance out some of the fast-paced nature of the analytical work. The middle-management deparment heads are both incredibly kind, well-intentioned people and they are very easy to come to with work related issues. Progress is on the horizon!

Very antiquated management practices, no salary transparency which lead to huge discrepencies in salaries between individuals with varying amounts of experience, education, and tenureship (note: since leaving, I've heard improvements have been made in this category!). There is very little feedback provided and the inorganic department didn't have formal performance reviews. which made growth feel extra slow. There is no true HR and the upper management is comprised of all relatives, which compromises certain professional boundaries. Lastly, the hours worked by salaried employees are very regularly greater than 40/week, with management's belief that it will "balance out throughout the year" rather than approving overtime--this did not seem effective and employees regularly worked 5-10 uncompensated hours per week in order to meet workload demands.

1. Enforce regular employee reviews run by the department heads with documented forms that are kept on file with HR.
2. Provide emperical info about employee performance (data output, QC, turnaround time) and keep on file for employee reviews.
3. Implement an HR program that does not have any family members or board members to avoid compromising integrity.
4. Require employees to sign in somehow to track hours for salaried and hourly individuals, with the expectation that extra time worked by a salaried employee equates to extra time to "bank" toward near-future use so that things balance out within one to two pay periods.
4. Pay employees bi-monthly instead of monthly
5. Pay for management training for your department heads and upper management, as well as any analysts being groomed for more responsibilty to help with future succession issues.
6. Encourage further learning by allowing employees to attend workshops, seminars, or conferences and include record of this in employee training folder.
7. Host "lunch and learn" type events (ie. 30-min to 1-hr presentation while employees are on the clock enjoying lunch) where Larry or an outside individual shares knowledge about the context of the analyeses we are performing and the real-life ramifications of the results so we can better understand client concerns and help answer questions.

Good, professional people
|

Nice work environment, and very nice people. Our lab was a small group and we all got along really well. Communication was easy, work was fun, and everybody worked hard. The job got complicated sometimes, but we helped each other out. Some of the best work-life balance I've ever had (except for the occasional hour at night or Saturday duties).

Low pay and benefits. Old-school owners that have a hard time with change (technology, new ideas, etc.) They didn't do direct deposit. LIMS was a nightmare (but props to management for programming themselves and fixing bugs).
