You don't have time to grade or decompress at that rate because you teach every day. Then there are mandatory meetings when some of the information from the meetings could be put in an email to save time. Pay & benefits They pay the faculty with terminal degrees like instructors. Which means most of the faculty are being paid the same because they do not differentiate by degree or experience. To put it plainly, Assistant and Associate professors make the same salary and that is not fair. The benefits are outrageous in terms of cost. If you are single its about 100.00 But for a family of three people the benefits are 1200.00 a month. They do not explain how or when benefits are taken out of your check. Most people do not even have the benefits there because they are so expensive. Then you are charged for your benefits when you cannot use them. Some of the faculty work as adjuncts just to break even. The online system to view your pays tubs and other information is antiquated. Job security and advancement There is no real development for job advancement. If you attend a conference on their behalf you do not receive any financial support. Despite, the president establishing a fund to do so. Management There needs to be changes made because people want to keep the school stagnated. Other colleges are making progress by embracing change and accepting the fact that traditional education is becoming obsolete. They are resistant to innovation, technology and even the way people dress. Some of the management are very hypocritical because the dress code is supposed to apply to everyone but it really doesn't. Some people wear casual clothes and sneakers every day and nothing is said to them but others are chastised. Culture I enjoyed my colleagues and we worked well together. But the administration is another story. We had rubrics and benchmarks for our curriculum. The students were eager to learn and they do need some supplemental support in getting ready for the expectations of college life. Department Chairs have adjunct positions and openly discuss them but when a faculty member wants to do the same thing because the pay is low it is problematic. Some deparrment chairs do not even communicate with faculty over the holiday period which is unprofessional and unacceptable. People seem to do what they want and have been for years but when you speak up about these incidents then you are causing problems. Overall I miss the good people I met and the eager scholars there but nothing else. You will not make any progress there and it is frustrating because HBCUS are already struggling in academia. The problem is that the EWC bus is trying to move forward but there are people who are purposely taking the gas out of it at any given point because they are resistant to change. I am an adjunct I wish the pay was a little higher/more frequent. I love my job! It is very rewarding and I truly appreciate the help within my department. Everyone is very helpful and wants you to succeed. People are not paid on time or correctly the school is stuck in the dark ages with most things not online requiring you to come to campus. To make it worse often you are told the wrong information so it is hard to do your job The school is historic and should be protected Everything else. Nobody, the Administration, Faculty, or Students takes education seriously. The executive administration pays themselves 100s of 1000s of dollars siphoning all of the money needed for students and faculty. Moreover, the department chairs were inefficient, non-communicative, and unapproachable. Faculty that care about the school and students are laid off, fired, or not renewed.
