Great Mission, Poor Management
I was really passionate about who we served and the programs we offered. There were some great staff that truly cared about the mission, and also were amazing to work with.
I found there to be lack of leadership and responsibility among supervisors and upper management. No accountability to actually getting stuff done properly, and I found my supervisor to be poorly trained and unprepared. Too many egos, too little done. I felt my work space to be uncomfortable around certain supervisors, and overall made for a rather stressful experience. Upper management does not handle critique well, and instead of making proper changes to structure and programs, they ignore those who were actually involved and hands on.

The staff are amazing and supportive, there is a "we are in this together" feeling. When you do have a happy ending with a participant that gets the help they need and the outcome that you have been working with its truly rewarding.
no support, no guidance, directors are intimidating and turn a blind eye to the truth and blame others instead of taking responsibility for not knowing anything. For a social justice organization, it is sad to see how much of a dictatorship it really is and to look good will waste your time they will ask you what you think. there is a lost sense of what the overall mission and vision are and it's more about meeting numbers and not allowing different programs to collaborate. Also don't get on their bad side by asking questions if something is ethical or legal, they'll find an excuse to fire you especially if you are a millennial

Even though you have "done your time" it's nice to see that you can roll up your sleeves beside your employees. If you truly care about the community you are really never done "doing your time". Also, stop blaming a generation for your overturn. there are so many social issues in this expensive city including bias against millennials, and you have enthusiastically played into it instead of getting to know our tech-savvy generation. Listen to your strong employees, if they are not happy with their supervisor it's not a generation thing it's a management thing. Quiz your directors of the programs they manage like how do you turn in reports and invoices, if they don't know its because they are not supporting their staff, the human mind is capable of retaining that information you are not that big.

Amazing Organization
El Centro de la Raza is an amazing organization with an impressive history. All of the staff cares a lot about the mission of the organization. Charla (once a week all-staff meeting discussing various social justice topics) seems pretty unique to the organization and is important to bring social justice topics to the forefront of our minds and brings us together as a staff. I feel respected as a staff member and love working here.

Disappointing and Heat Breaking
The feeling of working towards social justice and fighting for the rights of people is a great thing. When the founder was there he used to really invest time in developing leadership in people and got to know them on a personal level.
The focus of the organization claims to be around social justice and racial equity, but the reality is that the focus is now about economic development, housing and essentially business. While these are parts of social justice, the evidence that these are just side effects of the work is found in how people are treated. The workers are not valued, mistreated, disrespected and if you work closely with the leadership, you're bullied and intimidated in ways that are very inappropriate for an organization that claims to be about justice and honesty. This is by far the saddest and most disappointment parts of the organization. The leadership focuses on cultivating relationships with donors who bring money and power to the organization, but not in the investment of people for their value is simply being a person. Dr. King would be saddened to see how this has happened and even the founder would be sad. To have a building named after him and to have workers so badly mistreated is a tragedy.
