HID The Salary is okay. Nothing else is good All the Cons listed about Senior management from years previous years still exist 200%. Senior management are Bully's. They still manage by fear. Expect feedback only when things are wrong Its all about the blame culture. They tell you to 'call things out' when they go wrong. Then they blame you and fire. There is hardly any process for anything but they expect you to just do things the write way. Management in the UK office is weak. Its a puppet and weak leadership they have running the UK office, who looks to cover themselves from blame. However even uk management complain of the harsh nature and madness of Vancouver. People also have inflated roles to match their egos. Nepotism is still alive and well. They tell you they 'do right by their clients' but inside they don't give a damn. They tell you that their clients are their assets. But again they really don't care. They can get rid of you for the dumbest reasons. Senior management say they are direct when they talk, but in reality its simple immaturity and showing off egos they suffer from. There are some lifers in the company who think they know-it-all. But it just shows lack of exposure and immaturity. They treat a lot of staff like poo. Well that's what you get from a company that has no HR. They were smart, competent, and always helpful. Ensemble was a "small" developer by industry standards, so I enjoyed significant opportunities to learn and grow while I was there. Even as an Analyst fresh out of college, I was invited to sit at the table, felt my opinions were valued, and was encouraged to speak up. If I thought something should be done, I'd pitch my idea and were often granted ownership over the project. I felt I had a lot of room to grow and were offered salary that was slightly higher than the market average each year. The Managing Partners really made an effort to get to know their employees. I received hand written birthday cards every year and were taken to dinner with my colleagues once in a while. My managers were incredibly supportive and always had my back. None of the con's came as a surprise, and I was fully informed during my interview. My only complaint was the office location - Long Beach is a rapidly growing city, but is nowhere near as exciting as DTLA or Orange County for a young professional. private:ensemble https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=382058 Sep 7th, 2019 12:00AM Open Open Ensemble Richmond, BC Good place to call home - Good work culture that gives people chances at experiencing different technologies. - multiple career stream for developers, QA, UX, PM. - Promotes heavily internally based on skills and capabilities. - low attrition rate (2-3 people out of 150 in a given year. ) - company has been growing organically. - no internal pressure for growth (both size and revenue) - stable management style (zero lay off during financial crisis of 2012) - people with good communication and customer facing skills are given opportunity to go abroad (US and UK). Some have taken a 6 month stint in Ensemble’s London office. - good social culture with lots of activities. There are people in various age groups from fresh grad(20’s) to young professionals (20-30’s) to young families (30-40 with children.), and some old timers (40-50). - emphasis is on the job training, although there has been more lunch time seminars on new tech such as React, React Native, Redux, etc. - good flexibility. The management really stay true to their words about how they care about us. This comes through in how long people have stayed at the company and the fact they fire customers that have been abusive to us. - above average pay and good salary progression. In depth performance review happen through out the year. Strange to hear management talking about wanting to find ways to pay QA more by finding ways to derive more values for Ensemble’s customers. - excellent work life balance. Stable 40 hour work week with some minor overtime during crunch times. - they pay for banked time which is rare in the Vancouver tech industry. - free parking and shuttle service to Canada line. - most people worked from 10-6 and with some allowances to work from home to reduce commute. - recently they purchased these phone booths to allow people to have private conversations in an open work space. Free breakfast would be nice, although there’s a lot of free food already (monthly lunches. Monthly snack days. Lunch and learn bi weekly with food, summer bbq, etc. I am only writing about breakfast because glassdoor wants more content.). Ensemble is the first (and only) company I've worked for that was interested in me and my goals, and actually willing to help me be the kind of developer I want to be, not just sit in a box and write code all day. Ensemble has a lot of the "usual" tech company perks, such as weekly yoga classes, monthly lunches, lunch & learns, quarterly events, standing desks, games and movie nights, etc. They also have a great benefits package with health, dental, optical, etc. and employees work flexible schedules and/or work from home. Ensemble has a really supportive environment. Every employee, from the CEO to the summer interns, are helpful, friendly, and kind. It continues to surprise me just how much Ensemble actual cares about its employees and treats everyone like a big family. Speaking of which, the quarterly events are all family-friendly so that employees can bring spouses, kids (and dogs!) along. Ensemble also lets employees bank their overtime hours and use them as vacation time later. Most other companies expect overtime from their employees without providing the actual time off. Or the time of is "take an afternoon" or "come in a few hours late", but here I was able to take an extra full week of holiday because a tight-deadlined project had required overtime. There are a lot of people at Ensemble, sitting in a lot of different configurations, so unless you work on a project with someone you don't get a lot of opportunities to get to know your colleagues.
