Love the unlimited PTO offering.

Hmmm. I think they can diversify the management. Lots of Boston group think.

most TOXIC place I've worked
|
|
1. Unlimited PTO - In theory, enjoy unlimited PTO, but brace yourself for a tsunami upon your return. Additionally, brace for quarterly shifts in priorities; don't be surprised if the entire team has shifted focus to the next shiny object.
2. Spend - You receive plentiful swag, and they invest significantly in sending you to Boston every quarter. However, those quarterly gatherings are totally useless and utterly time-wasting. It's essentially just the CTO's self-indulgence at the cost of your valuable time.
3. Financial Security - The company's financial stability is crucial in today's tech market. Picture a troupe of clowns freely wielding a limitless credit card to cater to your needs.
|
At Ecater, a dictatorial engineering culture led by the CTO stifles collaboration, fosters fear-based leadership and constrains innovation. Micromanagement and a dearth of autonomy contribute to high turnover and a reluctance to embrace change, while the lack of accountability sustains the toxic atmosphere. These dynamics impede creativity, innovation, and employee morale, posing a significant threat to the company's long-term prosperity.
The CEO preaches about failing fast, yet the punitive atmosphere in engineering penalizes mistakes without allowing room for risk-taking or learning. Public shaming in group settings further erodes psychological safety.
With a non-technical CTO, engineering leadership lacks technical expertise and stability, with a revolving door of leaders. The remaining ones are the worst. Middle management at Ecater is in disarray, characterized by inept Directors contributing to a chaotic environment. Senior Managers and Managers, largely inexperienced in personnel management, are embarking on a collective experiment, further complicating the situation.
One can linger here for extended periods without contributing substantially. Essentially, the engineering department fails to produce tangible results. I haven't witnessed any deliverables with meaningful business impact throughout my tenure.
The hero culture is promoted here, and individualism wins over teamwork, focusing on individual achievements rather than collective efforts. Entrenched in the toxic culture are the old guards operating within trusted circles. Crossing one of them makes survival here challenging. Favoritism toward veterans is prevalent, leaving newcomers to struggle. Success often hinges on one's ability to carry favor with influential individuals.
Top leadership (CXOs) at Ecater is mired in chaos and infighting, which creates additional instability and undermines the company's ability to provide clear direction and cohesive decision-making.
Trust in HR is compromised by mishandled employee concerns and favoritism, exacerbating existing challenges and undermining faith in organizational integrity. This feedback is offered as a reflection to prompt meaningful change.

It's time for a significant overhaul in leadership. Address the issues within engineering leadership, ending the dictatorship mentality and repairing middle management. Prioritize cultivating a healthy engineering culture with a focus on psychological safety. Exercise fiscal responsibility, recognizing that much of the spending is fueled by investor funds. Undertake genuine efforts to improve company culture, beyond surface-level actions aimed at boosting ratings. Part ways with outdated leadership figures to pave the way for positive change.

Lot of changes, but this is pretty standard in this field/industry with our size/trajectory, so not upset about change.
