It was a small and tightly knitted group right in the downtown area. Unlimited PTO was nice. The layoffs were pretty rough and everyone staying was expected to generate the same output when half the staff had been cut. People were leaving before they happened and people continued after they happened. Lots of engineers were moved around (mobile to frontend) or forced to support an entire platform by themselves which really didn't help morale. I left because the technical debt accumulated and the company would devote more time adding features than spend time to fix the underlying issues. In my opinion, company culture and values start at the top and trickle down throughout the organization. In this case, when it comes to the founder and CEO of the company, I'll say this: My dogs leave more character in tightly coiled piles at the dog park. Quite the surprise with how deep the pockets of their investors allegedly are. I really feel sorry for the others that were fired but even more for those who weren't. I can't imagine the workload they inherited as a result, for a company who clearly doesn't value people. And most of them were mid or junior level... They said the "growing pains of being a startup" (ie: turnover, layoffs, and other such volatility) was over because they are "well connected in the industry" and have "the support of owners and others in the sport that have deep pockets". Apparently not deep enough, or just a bald-faced lie, because they let go of all the contractors and within weeks laid off a large chunk of the engineering team due to "lack of funding". Really, with how coordinated this was, it almost seemed like this was the plan all along. In any event, not a good look if you ever want to attract talent again. And goes to show this is not a place to work if you are looking to build a career. Unfortunately, the leadership team that created this mess is still in charge, and likely to do this again. Unless you have no other choice, and this is the only place willing to hire you, I'd avoid it until they can make it a couple of years without a large bout of turnover of this nature, or they get the hint and bring in a leadership team that knows how to sustain and grow a company. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 2.0 1.0 5.0 1.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 707085 Open You are going to have to do more to fix your reputation than simply creating a "team" web page and highlighting what few engineers you have left. Simply firing the expensive employees to make ends meet will only work for so long. You're going to want to make some real changes at the top of the chain to signal you're serious about the company's longevity. The company makes claims about what it can do based on its connections with investors who have “deep pockets”. There was a sense that, because the company was connected with deep pockets, it would be able to raise enough money to keep things running fairly easily. However, the company recently cut contractors and laid off people because they were unable to raise enough money. And it was done in a way that surprised everyone who wasn’t in the know. There was no sense of urgency to try and make things work. One day it was normal, and the next, more than half of the company’s product team was cut. The leadership, which lead the company to such a dire state, is still running the show. And there’s little reason to believe something like this won’t happen again. If you’re considering this company, make sure you can take care of yourself if they were to cut you. They’ve shown a repeated willingness to cut people to save money.
