Fasturtle is a very flexible company and all of the employees are very friendly. It is incredibly helpful that we are able to work remotely right now with the restrictions on businesses in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has allowed me a measure of job security right now, even though I am part-time, that a lot of part-time workers don't have right now. Great group of people to work with. Really knowledgable about digital marketing and website design. It's a small team less than 15 so you can't hide but with clear direction they let you do your job and get out off your way. A lot of potential and the companies been around for 19 years and is well respected in the community. Matt, Amanda and Eric leave you alone to get your job done and are there to answer any questions. Good benefits and work environment. It's a small company so some of the structure isn't there. The owner, Eric Olsen, is an immature, incompetent, bully who is really a mid level sales manager who thinks of himself as the CEO of Microsoft. Run from this place. You have been warned. They like to spend a lot of money on season tickets, “charity events” (that I suspect will soon be investigated) and lots of company swag, hosting small events, and “awards” of which include glass plaques that unfortunately I cannot post pictures on here but they don’t seem to have been given by any real or creditable association but rather appear to have been purchased online and “made.” That must make a “cool” and authentic culture right? I have thought long and hard on this review (had some legal help sure) but encourage users to read this entire review for what it is - an unemotional statement of opinion based on my 3+ years experience at Fasturtle that you should consider to make an informed decision on whether to join their team or not. It’s been well over a year since I’ve worked at Fasturtle and if I could, I would send red roses and thank them every day for leading me to see clearly and accept that some business owners are simply set in their ways and that for me, I eventually learned, I could not work in such an environment as it is a detriment to what I define as “true success and forward progress” for my career. Let me provide some material substance; I was initially approached by Eric Olsen and ultimately asked to come back to Fasturtle in 2016 when Eric Olsen, the “CEO” of Fasturtle presented to me, company challenges it was facing; which included stalemate in revenue, an increase in lost clients and his desire to go to “the next level.” He proposed me an opportunity to join him to help improve the company overall. And so, using my years of digital and leadership experience, I accepted the offer and helped to bring on an experienced team. Along with the team, I helped expand and improve their products, helped improve their internal project management tools, helped rebrand the company (website and logo) and helped turn the company around, overall, helping the company to receive awards they had never had before, extending my relationships with industry thought leaders to be on their podcasts, and the numbers correlated that such team efforts helped contribute to an increase in the companies overall performance including getting them their Google Partnership. Per their website, Fasturtle was established in 2000, making them 18+ years old. It might be a good idea to do your homework on this company, which may include going through the AZDOR, or AZ Corporate Commission website, or through other legal channels, to see what Fasturtle claimed for their taxes and their filed earning statements. This will help you better understand how valuable they may or MAY NOT be against the many other agencies in the valley. Eric lists himself as a “CEO” but he has no board to report to, nor is a publicly traded company, why the "mis-use" or sensational title? Take a look at the 2019 BBB Book of Lists, Fasturtle states it has 18 employees yet their website shows 13 - If they have 5 other employees - why discriminate against the others, leaving them off the website? Fasturtle, also has listed the WSJ under awards and publications but upon a search on the WSJ site, Fasturtle to date, is NOT published on the WSJ site. It seems to me these are all “Red flags.” After I quit, in what I thought were reasonable and good terms, roughly 5-6 months later I was suddenly, out of no-where, served with threatening legal papers (yes, you can expect that to happen to you if you leave because I understand that I am not that only former employee to whom Eric has served “threatening” legal papers to.) From the context of the letter, it seems Eric Olsen, rather than being an accountable leader, needed someone to blame for his companies negligence, so he pointed his finger at a former employee (me in this case) when I had been away from the company for more than 5 months! A letter full of accusations and inflammatory statements that were nothing short of the little boy throwing a temper tantrum. Per the letter, Eric Olsen claimed Fasturtle was losing a bunch of valuable clients and employees. Maybe had Eric put half as much energy into working with, appreciating and listening to his own employee's and clients rather than blaming everyone else, he'd be in a better position? In receiving this letter, my lawyers dug in and met with former clients and employees, documenting their experiences, contracts, NDA’s, offer letters, and email & communication exchanges with Eric. I will leave it at that. If you are looking to join Fasturtle, great, but I would recommend you have a lawyer or an attorney review and document the company NDAs and non-competes before signing anything, as the ones my possession seem to be full of unenforceable clauses because they are so unreasonably constrained, hindering and disparate to the employee. To date, Eric’s continued obsession with me and other former employees was and is grossly concerning. We all have documented the online stalking that has occurred by him and some of his staff, even to this day. My legal team as I understand it, conducted an investigation, one of several, one of which was of a copy of their “2018 employee handbook” and it revealed rules that likely violated state laws and also contained numerous ethically, morally, and professionally questionable “policies.” Hopefully, Fasturtle, will take the appropriate steps to update their policies. I can attest hearing it directly on record, that former employees would classify Eric Olsen as a bully, a con artist, a manipulator and a person who thinks he’s bigger than life and above the law with the power to control everyone. An example of this can be found in the 2018 Fasturtle Employee Handbook and the Separation Agreements that state that “ex-employees are not to interact with other ex-employees or existing employees.” So it stands to reasonably conclude that even after you leave Fasturtle, in Eric’s eyes, he still has “authority” over you, almost like a human trafficker would act. An educated professional could seemingly say it’s evident from how the Fasturtle “policies” are written and worded, that employed people appear to be more of Eric’s possessions rather than valued employees. So with that, I am so beyond thankful and grateful to be out of there. After 18 years of being in a “small-big” industry where everyone knows everyone, quality and successful people in my observation tend to gravitate to one another, for Fasturtle, I am afraid Eric’s past and present actions, poor treatment of clients and employees alike, seeming manipulation, and reputation as a whole is beginning to surface, and Eric will ultimately have no one to blame but himself, due to his over reactions, his behavior and mistreatment of clients, employees and misguided decisions. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 11.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 790008 Open Leave your former employee's alone and stop worrying about what everyone else is doing. Allowed for a flexible schedule if you were sick, had family emergencies, etc. as long as you were communicative (depending on if the owner liked you, which was obvious in an 11 person office). But this shouldn't be viewed as a pro but a norm. Had the opportunity to work with people of all the different skill sets being in a digital marketing company. I actually learned more from the other employees than I did my boss/owner. Would buy team lunches randomly but it got more often when we moved in the new building at the Scottsdale Quarter, which was all for show because Eric Olsen, the owner, is all about image, regardless of how much he does(n’t) make and I would know as I worked under him in marketing. But the free a lunches and coffee was cool… but not compared to what other businesses do for their employees. There was a reason I worked there for 3 ½ years and was asked multiple times over my tenure to become full time (I'm a hard, dedicated, organized worker who has a great rapport with the other employees and clients) and I would turn it down every time (take a hint and read this, it may save you time and your career!) I lost absolute faith in the company when I saw 2 very good leaders and 23 employees pushed out by the owner in his bullying nature, in a very short time. There is no room for employee growth and never will be, don’t expect a long term, awesome career with great benefits. The benefits Fasturtle offers are extremely sub-standard compared to other businesses that offer 401k matches, far better health benefits, better pay, better vacation and know how to build true culture etc. My first raise after my one year was $1, after my second year it $.50 and then after my third year, it was approximately .$45 - a whole whopping $2 over a total of 3 ½ dedicated years!!! The company loved my work, loved my attitude, acknowledged my “loyalty” and supported the enthusiasm I tried to bring to the team, but looking back, I was worth a mere $2 to Eric Olsen and Fasturtle which is an extra $80 a month after 3 years!!! Given everything I was doing, this was insulting and pathetic. Eric didn’t appreciate my value at all, but he sure was great at making me feel like something great was coming for me, but it never did. He basically led me on and I believe held it against me for not going fulltime. A retaliatory tactic that thankfully I saved documents on. Working with Eric in the 3 ½ years, allowed me to observe that he really pushed to make Fasturtle look bigger than it was. Examples include investing in tons of swag (we had new shirts, stickers, etc. almost monthly) and sadly, most of the employees were embarrassed to wear or use the swag because of the company reputation, specifically Eric Olsens'. He would buy expensive tickets to the WMPO, D'Backs and other events that would make what happened with the FYRE festival look small in comparison. When the social media manager left, Eric Olsen demanded I pick up the slack for the social media accounts so the client's projects didn't fall behind. I was part-time and had two other jobs of my own; and had little to no knowledge on the account deliverables, strategy or execution. BUT I was his “property” clearly and that’s how he treated me. I was demanded to pick up someone else job duties and manage those clients when I am not even a social media specialist. That just goes to show the lack of care or honesty behind deliverables when it comes to the client's services and the directive was given by the owner of Fasturtle himself! This is a classic case of his poor judgment as a leader, handing over more responsibilities (with no additional offer of bonus or compensation) to an inexperienced employee working on things they are not versed in. The turnover…. WOW! For a small business that had 11 active employees, I saw 23 people come and go in my 3 ½ years! It was the most turnover I had ever in my life seen in any workplace. I think it was mostly because no one had career growth, Eric has proven not to be a good leader, he would over promise and under deliver on services for his client's just to make a sale, and it would result in a backlash on the employees. We sold services we didn't even offer or have access to! Turnover in clients was even high too. It is embarrassing to have your name tied to that. It's a very small world out there and you never know who you'll run into or with again. Tools, systems, and software were outdated, although they did improve when certainly experienced managers came aboard and turned the company around on a better path. In my experience, Eric is extremely unorganized (check his cluttered desk) and it was apparent to the team that he never knew what was truly going on with clients or their accounts until there is an issue. Then he would dig into it and became reactionary and often hostile towards employees, attacking them for their inability to deliver something he sold that was typically out of scope. I lost ALL respect for the owner and company when he asked me to submit an application for the 2017 ASU 100 award for a certain employee based on their meeting the ASU 100 qualifications. The award was won and given to recipient at Fasturtle via email and the employee was given an invitation to the award ceremony. I was then asked by Eric Olsen to contact the award association months later and direct the ASU 100 Foundation to remove the employee in which I had initially submitted the award for. To switch the name to another employees name (someone who didn't apply nor qualified according to ASU guidelines as he hadn’t even graduated at that time.) The owner asked ME to do something unprofessional, unethical, and deceitful. Something I completely disagreed with and thought it was wrong. I even told Eric I thought that was wrong considering the original award recipient was still an employee at that time. But Eric Olsen's actions were immoral, intimidating, unprofessional and well documented. When he did this, I knew Eric Olsen was out for himself and could care less about anyone but himself. It explains the embarrassing annual review raises and the degrading demeanor in which he would talk to his employees. I cannot work for a person or company who claims to pride themselves on their family and faith, telling others about doing right when I witness Eric lie and do anything that goes against what he believes, only to benefit himself, regardless of who it hurts or how unethical it is. The owner is so wrapped up in reputation that if you talk to past employees, do your research. Turnover doesn't happen when your employees are happy. Fasturtle and Eric Olsen are known for hiring young, inexperienced, straight out of college students to run his “departments” so he can pay them less, taking them for granted, but I guess that is him "Giving people a chance." How naive. I witnessed the owner make employees cry without even knowing the full story of that employee (again, he was understanding if he liked you.) You are still operating at a 11-13 person team (I'm only counting the turnover while I was there), and you BARELY hit two million revenue mark after 18 years, and you call that an achievement? Accept that you really don’t care about your employees or your clients, it’s just “numbers” at the end of the day as you would always preach. You’ll never be successful if you don’t have trust in a team and empower them. Location is nice too but parking is not good. CEO Eric Olsen is simply not a nice person. He is very much all about him. He promises things to clients that his team has no way to deliver and then blames the team when it doesn't get done. He is very immature, angry and unprofessional. He creates a lot of the company's problems and then expects everyone else to fix them. Eric has burned a lot of bridges and there's a reason why this place has such high turnover. Talk to former employees before working here. Most of the positive reviews are fake. No growth opportunities. I was promised full time and never received. Looking to leave. Where to begin. The CEO of this company is perhaps one of the worst leaders I’ve ever had the displeasure of coming in contact with. Prepare to be micromanaged by a control freak whom has obvious trust issues, doesn’t know the first thing about leading a team, has regular overreactions to minor things without even learning all the facts first, etc...the list goes on and on. Also, don’t ever expect to get paid what you’re worth because he’s also cheap. He’ll find a way to get rid of you before giving you a raise and then bring in some young kid that he can pay next to nothing. He’ll even find ways to not pay you commissions that you’ve earned. In short, Eric is a greedy, micromanaging CEO with anger management/control issues mixed in as well. There was once a rockstar team in place here and almost all of them have left. Do yourself a favor and give this place a wide berth. Also, looking at reviews on here, I am willing to bet some of the positive ones are fake and I know that scare tactics/legal threats are used to prevent employees from revealing the truth! Was able to negotiate a decent raise after being lowballed. CEO is a bully. Over the past 3 years, he's chewed up and spit out 28 employees. He assumes the worst about his employees, and treats us like children. A simple question from a client will freak him out and send him on the warpath, even when we're handling it proactively and with professionalism. I was overworked (at 30 hours/week, responsible for over 100 pieces of 300+ word content per month) but I enjoyed giving clients excellent customer service, which they deserve, and which is in accordance with company values. But Eric just wanted us to pump out deliverables, because he overpromises (including promising stuff we don't even do as a company). When problems arise, he blames everyone but himself. This is fine when he spends all his time at the golf course, but when he brings his anger and fear into the office, it's kind of hard to work. There would be more negative reviews, but he likes to have former employees sign non-disclosure agreements, and he also likes to send threatening letters when former employees speak out.
