Treated very poorly. Don't work here if you are in special education. The lack of communication and support is challenging. I've taught in other school districts and Federal Way's culture is very toxic and cares little of student needs. Staff are expendable. Hated the administrative inconsistencies. I absolutely adore working with preschool scholars; it is the perfect age - they've got the basics down, and are eager for learning. I love befriending the families, visiting their homes, and supporting them as well as their children. However, as a state-funded preschool, there are so many umbrella organizations that we have to comply with, in addition to our supervisor's personal belief in a specific, more abstract form of child-led inquiry learning (a philosophy that I personally agree with, but one which was too complicated for many colleagues to interpret), resulting in an overall confusion and every site projecting its own interpretation. Additionally, every teaching partnership is like a marriage; my last co-teacher sucked all enjoyment from my job, my life, and my sanity. The family support specialist and I would have hour long crying sessions at least weekly after our co-worker left for the day - debriefing and checking one another's sanity - did that really happen? Is there any other possible interpretation?! We're now legally divorced. There is a strategic plan and systemic approach to all initiatives along with an unwavering effort towards dismantling institutional racism. That said, this is challenging work and only those with a growth mindset, who can be partner on mission towards reaching all students will endure this profession. It has been said, "On our worst day, we are some child's greatest hope!" In the end, the fruit produced and internal rewards are priceless.
