Interrupted Opportunities
|
Fielding has 45 years of history with a terrific extended learning model. There is an ongoing effort to move from a tuition-financed model to an endowment. It's collegial environment & inclusivity are, in my opinion, sullied only by the departure of innovators at crucial moments that prevents it from being *the* online leader. 3 times since my association, I've witnessed sudden departures w/no explanation given to those students/faculty left behind. This leaves a chilling effect, as well.

If you are interested in advancing your education or career within education or leadership this is a great place to be. After a year you get an huge tuition discount. There are opportunities to travel within the states if that is something you have wanted to do. Mobility within the organization is slow. If you can wait it out for a few years opportunity may open up for career advancement. Recommend completing a certificate ASAP if you plan on staying for a while.

Awful experience! Stay away
|
They don't respect their part-time instructors. Full-time faculty have no publications and no record of success and those are the people that serve as members in the search committee.
Who knows how the full-time faculty got hired. Maybe due to connections they had earlier with people higher up in the ladder.
Worst experience ever. I taught in many colleges and universities. This has been the worst experience ever!

Amazing Staff - poor management

Was a great school, innovative at the time of conception. Do not know when to cut loose bad manager, the rest of the staff suffer. many good people lost because, HR and management will not act.

A good, mission driven university
|
Fielding Graduate University is a non-profit, distributed graduate school. They are a mission driven institution with compelling values including advancing social justice and a learner centered education. As with many non-profits and private/small institutions of higher education, Fielding runs with a lean staff. Staff employees will often wear many hats and will be placed in a position to develop skill beyond what the job description might entail. This can be a positive for professional development, but can also pose a busy and stressful work environment. I think overall Fielding has a positive work culture and provides a pretty generous benefits package. This compensates for wages that will skew to the lower side of market value. There are opportunities for professional development, though people with initiative will benefit most for the offerings. Leadership is competent, though not all are wired for developing their direct reports of developing strong relationships. Individuals that need a more proactive approach from their supervisor might be left wanting.
Santa Barbara itself is a very expensive place to live.
