Lack of value of part-time GEC staff
|
|
Instructors are the heart of FC
Free Language courses for all staff/instructors
Flexibility of hours based of primary location
Being apart of a culturally diverse work environment
|
Entire GEC staff was laid off due to Covid-19 (no announcement to instructors, no warning, no investment in working with GEC coordinators schedules to maintain positions, a cold and distant parting of ways from CEO
Inconsistent pay
No sick days
Lack of transparent communication from HR or CEO
GEC’s treated like they are dispensable
Instructors and students found out about upcoming events/changes to the curriculum /internal hiring etc. before GEC’s
Minimum wage
No mission or vision statement for GEC’s or overall company
GEC’s having to do the work of full -time employees who did lack luster work during they day
Constantly contacted outside of scheduled work hours
Lack of empathy from CEO and leadership
No celebration of GEC staff but GEC’s are constantly critiqued on performances
GEC’s have to deal with the nuances of site directors (EC etc.) and takes the blunt of criticism of company
A CEO who lacks internal knowledge of what GEC’s roles consist of and site specific details
Illegal activity and inappropriate commutation from leadership
There’s more but currently lawsuit is in motion.

GEC’s are the heart of Fluent City! And if you haven’t figured that out as of yet, the longevity of your organization and business is questionable.

We are sorry to hear that you had an unsatisfactory experience during your time with us, this certainly does not reflect the work environment that we strive to create. Please know that lay-offs were a last resort and unfortunately a necessary decision due to the forced operational changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic; there was no ill-will, nor were lay-offs a reflection of Fluent City’s valuation of the GEC team, as we hope was evidenced by efforts including but not limited to the voluntary pay-outs of accrued sick time and severance payments received by terminated employees.

Because we whole-heartedly value transparency and creating open feedback loops on a regular and ongoing basis, I’d love to address some of your specific concerns:

Termination:
Lay-offs of the GEC Staff were only initiated after Fluent City heavily invested in a transition plan that allowed additional hours to all GEC team members after our company’s in-person operations were forced to shut down. Unfortunately, this mode of remote employment was unsustainable following the country’s COVID-19 pandemic related economic downturn.
We clearly and openly communicated all decisions that pertained to the GEC staff directly and promptly as they were made - no employee or student received privileged or confidential information before our staff members
Compensation and Earnings:
While pay rates may vary from employee to employee, the differing rates are to recognize and reward more tenured employees with higher pay
We also provided the team with an additional monthly engagement budget for celebrations, outings, etc, to help show our appreciation for the team’s work
Fluent City provides sick leave as required by law and opted to voluntarily pay-out accrued sick leave for all team members that were laid off due to the COVID-19 pandemic
Transparency and GEC Role Expectations:
We strive to have a clear mission and vision statement for our company and workforce and have consistently underlined our HR team’s availability, opening our doors for questions, comments and concerns. We are sorry to hear that you did not feel this transparency - we will certainly take this criticism into consideration with our current and future team members.
GEC’s were never expected to perform any work obligations outside of compensated hours. However, we employ a diverse set of team members that operate from different time zones around the clock, therefore sending communications to our GEC Staff outside of those hours was unavoidable.
We whole-heartedly contest any and all allegations of illegal activity, our business. If you are comfortable reaching out to our team directly with more information surrounding this claim, we would greatly appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns more thoroughly.
Optimized for learning
|
|
Mission-driven company that's seen a lot of changes during my time here, including new CEO as of 2019. Plenty of opportunity to take ownership over new projects and to learn by doing (it's an education company). Strong & supportive culture. Employees have a lot of autonomy, including option for remote work and unlimited vacation. Also free language classes.
|
Lots of change, but I guess that's standard with start ups. You have to remain flexible and willing to adapt to succeed

You can potentially learn a new language while working.
|
You are paid minimum wage and are expected to sell classes while there is a sales team and you do not get the commission for it. "Corporate" is a myth and often used as a threat. They talk about "Corporate " like it's an actual entity they want you to fear but they are never seen or heard from. The GECs are the face of the company and get paid the bare minimum and are treated with very little respect for their contribution. Little communication flows down from the top and we are made to feel like worker bees who should not ask any questions. There is very little feel of connection to the larger part organization.
There is a lack of management and training and the only feedback provided is negative and apparently something that has been going on for months but is only brought to your attention when it is the "last straw".
Highly disorganized- initial interviews are not double checked and booked on holidays with no communication that the interview has been cancelled or moved.

Try introducing yourself to those who work for you instead of sitting on Mount Olympus looking down on us. Update ALL staff on what's going on. If the "CEO" is going to come on site, might be nice if they acknowledge the people who work for them.

Big middleman cut
|
|
- Straightforward interview and onboarding process
- Fast response rate from middle management
- If you enjoy teaching and don't care about making this a job where you can live off of, there is great flexibility to the way you teach your class and kind clients that want to work hard to learn the language.
|
- Pretty typical to tutoring companies, tutors start out with an hourly rate of about 25% of what private clients pay ($90)
- Part-time employees as dispensable; raises are given based on packages clients renewed and not quality of teaching
- Like many startups (ie. Uber), growth and client experience is valued over the financial wellbeing of the part-time employee.

Treat your teachers more like people that also live in this expensive city! Paying instructors would inspire them to feel valued to deliver quality instruction for repeat clients.

Great place to work, great people to work with
|
|
1) The culture, above all. Everyone is thoughtful, it's really a feeling of being a part of a team. People have a variety of interests and are completely willing to share their knowledge and learnings with you. Accomplishments are recognized. And no one has really mentioned it, but weekly Donuts are amazing for getting to know your coworkers better.
2) Ability to own projects. The company is still pretty young and is still growing, which means you can really take control of something and make a big impact.
3) Vacation policy
4) Great work space at a coworking space in Brooklyn
|
The biggest con I've dealt with is that because we're still pretty small (20-25 people), when someone is absent, the impact is a little bit more noticeable.

Culture of Professional Development, Learning and High Performance
|
|
Unlimited Vacation! New coworking space with unlimited coffee and kombucha and the building is attached to a bar where the team frequents happy hours. The team is small, tight-knit and we all get along really well. The company culture is heavily focused on growth, learning, professional development and support for one another. I have had several different roles in the organization and have had the freedom to explore what I am passionate about. The management team is fully committed to the success of their direct reports as well as the organization as a whole. At Fluent City, you will work hard, but you have the unique opportunity to create work that you are the most proud of in your career because you will see things through from start to finish.
|
Office is wonderful as stated above, but it might be a bit difficult to get to for employees outside of Brooklyn.
