Big wigs make silly decisions

Really depends on the department. Overall, the entire place is discriminatory. My manager is great which is why I've stayed so long. They really decided to take care of the big wigs and stopped caring about the people who keep the place going. Shameful when the SHTF be prepared to not be cared about

As a postdoctoral fellow you don't get good benefits at GU. If you have your own grant (e.g. NIH NRSA) you get no benefits! management is poor and it takes them so long to process everything or to figure out how to process.

Overstaffed and Mismanaged
|
This is by far one of the most toxic environments to be immersed in. Too many egos with director titles that do nothing but deflect. No one is held accountable for their actions, thus things go unresolved not just days but years. The University's School of foreign service and law school is run well. Everything else including the medical school is badly mismanaged and for a good decade. Two years ago, a new CFO and COO were brought in to help resolve issues but so far nothing meaningful has been accomplished. Your title is not what you will be hired to do.

Pay & benefits
Benefits are ok. Free tuition changed. Now you have to pay 10% and no matching on retirement. University is hurting for money. Making lots of cuts. No raises.
Job security and advancement
There are training options but you have to fight for them. You can only go so far unless you know someone. Very political.
Management
Some of the worst mismanagement I've ever seen. Preferential treatment given to some. Mainly you're just a worker bee with a limited scope to supervise subordinates. Management is all about themselves and trying to make themselves look better while stepping on the back to their middle management and employees. Lots of fraud waste and abuse.
Culture
It's all about the perception of the university. Money is first and employees are last. It's a job with benefits but you definitely won't be paid what you are worth.
Overall
It's a job with limited benefits but don't expect a whole lot out of it. You will be controlled by incompetent upper management and limited by politics. If you were looking for a real police job that operates like any normal municipal police department, this is not it. It's a glorified security job and if you can accept that you will be successful. If you strive for greatness you will not.

High Bureaucracy and low pay wages & salary

They have a positive approach towards employees; however, the common complaint is the salary and the wages throughout. DC is a very expensive town, if I had to stay in that job until I retire, I would have no money to retire from. I cannot speak on behalf of the faculty, but staff are very much underpaid. I heard it's because of the tuition benefits employees get after 1-3 years. Not worthy for me.
