Although I admire the giving mission of the company and the good that has come from donations, I advise they look inward to create a healthier/happier work environment. At the end of the day, you can't pour from an empty cup. I would advise taking care of internal problems and making employees feel valued before taking care of others.

The work culture on the hot shop floor is friendly, and generally more forgiving to beginners than it was several years ago.

Flexible schedule
You get to blow glass! Every day! If you are very motivated you can make some small objects for yourself during your lunch break, but most employees are too exhausted.

Money: paycheck bonus can fluctuate wildly from week to week based on production totals, often due to things outside of your control.
Body ruining labor: A few years of a full time schedule may result in permanent repetitive stress injuries.
Perceived lack of respect from management: Due to personnel changes a few years ago hotshop management has improved dramatically. However, I think there is a valid perception that highly skilled glassblowers who have worked at glassybaby for many years have no way to advance themselves, or have their opinions considered.

The phrase "you are replaceable" has been heard a few times from areas of management. Consider: many of the glassblowers have 20+ years of experience, and a few current and former gaffers are literally world class. The standards for quality and production are extremely high, while the madrona shop is ridiculously overcrowded. Your Berkeley shop experiment should show you that your standards and expectations are based on having a ridiculously over qualified labor pool in the Seattle area, and that we are not replaceable. We are, in fact, your most precious resource and the heart and soul of your company. Our expertise about OUR product should be respected. In short, there should be more internal recruitment and job creation for veteran employees who have real, common sense ideas that come from the realities of our job. Thanks
