Good office location. Lin-Manuel Miranda sometimes comes by. Snacks. Toxic, exploitative, racist. This company treats employees of color, and junior employees in general, extremely poorly. Turnover for employees of color is extremely high due to tokenization, lack of upward mobility, and an extreme lack of diversity and cultural competence in the office. With a few exceptions, the leadership is aloof, and the vast majority of managers director level and up are not interested in mentoring and professional development of direct reports. Some are neglectful of even their own accounts, leaving junior staff to do the majority of the work. They will ask you what you're interested in doing to expand your skillset, and tell you what you need to accomplish to get a raise or a promotion, but there is no rhyme or reason to how they evaluate staff, what projects they put you on, or who gets promoted or when. Several staff I've known prior to and during my time at GSG reported feeling gaslighted, burnt out, and exploited. This is because the company is not making their profit goals so is willing to take on scores of low-retainer clients and work their managers, senior associates, and associates to the bone - yet it hasn't helped their bottom line; it's only destroyed staff morale. The worst part of this is that you learn nothing; they drill in "the GSG way" of doing things but it's not useful once you leave GSG. I've gone on to a few more positions after this and have been 1000% happier and learned 1000x more than I did at GSG. I would strongly recommend not working here, unless you are fine working crazy hours for not a lot of pay, and are interested in polling and research for a year-long stint at a firm that, despite all of its inner dysfunction, manages to have a pretty good reputation. Toxic work environment. No training. No room to make mistakes. The clients can be interesting. Snacks. You are thrown into big accounts and big projects with almost no training. No work-life balance, at all. You are on call always, Colleagues are nice, and they offer to help in training but they themselves are so swamped with work they never can devote any of it to training you. Absolutely toxic people get promoted while people who value any semblance of sleep and life are shunned. It is expected, and a point of pride for many staff here, that they work at least 60 hour weeks. The pay is far below market level. Expecting anyone in the DC/NYC/Seattle area to work 60 hours a week for 47k a year is criminal. The culture talks a lot about the "Global 15" like the freshman 15 where you gain weight out of the sheer stress and inability to move or go out due to living at the office under crumbling amounts of work. You are typically working on a handful of different projects at once, which can include everything from political to issue advocacy to corporate client work. The company makes a real effort to train you and provide a good work culture. The offices are in a fantastic location in New York and D.C. The level of exposure to this kind of client work and responsibility allows for a lot of learning to happen quickly. A lot of opportunity to advance. The hours can be long. You are often working on several projects at the same time and need to bring good project management skills to the table. Expect to work outside of normal business hours and on weekends when needed. While there are definite training opportunities, you are immediately put onto client projects and expected to learn fast. The office is nice and the clients can be really interesting. Culture is toxic. Company lacks diversity, especially at the upper levels. Very little room for advancement depending on your role. Employees are expected to be on call 24/7, work weekends and nights. Great perks as far as endless coffee, breakfast, snacks, and drinks. They have lunch & learns often and a fantastic annual company retreat. The people who work at GSG are incredibly intelligent and talented at what they do. There is no work/life balance but they're trying to fix that- blame it on the industry we're in.
