Outstanding law firm with business unit structure not yet developed

Goodwin Procter is not where I spent the majority of my "big law" career to date, but joined for a period of about two years with a partner with whom I worked for about six years at my prior law firm, K&L Gates LLP. Goodwin is an outstanding law firm, with incredibly talented lawyers and an impressive, committed client base. The firm has a business unit structure that is relatively new and it did not wind up being the right "fit" for my more general corporate background, but I have nothing but praise for the firm - everyone with whom I worked from mid-years to partners were amazingly capable lawyers.

This law firm is maintaining the status quo established and ongoing In the legal field. They are headquartered on the East Coast where management is behind the times in terms of the current roles and responsibilities of secretaries on the West Coast. They insist that with these modern technologies secretaries should be able to support a minimum of 5 people. Reporting over $1B in revenue, they cap staff raises at 2% with mediocre bonuses and benefits. Overtime is largely prohibited and there is little to no advocacy for support staff. They've outsourced all ancillary services so there is no pride of ownership in the tech, reception, or office services departments and the end result is a perpetual revolving door - high turnover, especially on the Associate and Paralegal levels. Everyone is always looking for a way to get out. Morale is always low. There are cliques, back biting and a darkness that hovers over every office, largely due to the issues at the home office that directly impact the entire structure from top to bottom.

Productive and enjoyable place to work

Goodwin is a great place to work. I wasn't as busy as I like to be, but I learned a lot and enjoyed the people that I worked with. I supported two partners and an associate with telephones (to and from clients), documents, scanning, filing to paperless environment online, expenses, travel and various other responsibilities that came up every day.

We used to only have a fiscal year-end in September. We now have a calendar year-end in December as well. I remember being able to enjoy the holidays and unfortunately that is not the case any longer.
