If you want to be published every single day, pitch your own ideas, work closely with the managing editor, and build your own portfolio, this job is perfect for you. Once you start, they will give you grunt work and boring assignments like guides (hated those). However, if you prove that you're a compelling writer in those guides by interweaving your distinctive narrative, opportunities will follow. Likewise, if you pitch ideas to the editor, opportunities will follow. You can also ask her if there's anything from a certain category she wants from you (e.g. dating, fitness, celebrity gossip), and she will more than happy to give you one of her pitches that she has written down on her to-do list. She's not always the most hands on because she's not always there, but this is the best internship if you're eager and a self starter. Those aren't hard qualities to possess if you love what you do. It's an acquired taste. You really can't expect structure. Was able to write two articles a day and work closely with the current editor. Attend high-profile events in NYC. Great networking. Also worked with an amazing class of fellow interns. Also earned school credit that counted towards my graduation. All-in-all a fantastic experience! Not a good place to grow or learn from upper management. The CEO turned out to be an overgrown, highly unprofessional mean girl who seems to use the site as her personal burn book. She had designated favorites and would influence them with her diatribes against other social media personalities that she clearly perceived as threats and would have them write pieces mocking her frenemies. There was also a lack of direction as the staff would often receive bizarre e-mails from the CEO that rarely, if ever contained full sentences or logically thought out plans. Her total lack of character and integrity was fairly pathetic/uncomfortable to witness at times as a very junior underling. She would make fun of the fact that she didn't know interns' names (that she had hired!) in front of her favorites and seemed to seek constant professional and personal validation from those underneath her. Everything she does is completely self-serving and 100% only in her own best interests. This was not an environment that fostered intelligent conversation or healthy debate as it was not in the CEO's personality or skill set to be able to handle being challenged or called out on her bs. For self starters there are a lot of opportunities to grow as a writer and get your voice heard.
